All good points PUGZoR. The Rukus is a good low volume example to compare how Toyota Aus may price the 86. And hopefully the base spec will include some extras to surprise us.

At least we should be able to expect both specs to come with identical drivetrain and suspension set-ups, so no one misses out on the car's performance regardless of spec.

you are right that finance is the same for any model. my point is that when a car is a low volume model, there isn't much incentive for the manufacturer to offer such benefit. of cos they can do it, but would they??!! Toyota didn't for the low volume Rukus/FJ Cruiser and i'd think 86 will be similar.

I know I say this hastily and I will wait till release info is final but if US base FRS is the same as AUS base and yanks get it for $24000-25000, I can't justify paying $35000 + Orc.

Given the current $ values why such a difference??

Jfc, same reason they can have an s5 for 35k and we pay over 100k.

Australia hS a low volume car market we are luck to sell 1mil cars in a year.

So manfactures have to sell cars for more to make the same money cause the volume of sales is less.
(i have done some research of the matter cause I was going nuts with the price diff)

Unit sold less = cost per car is higher = price is higher.

Shipping, customs duty, local transport, marketing costs (per vehicle) are also higher in Aust.

Would an online sales work?
Lower the overheads, don't have to build a big shiny dearlership?
Just have a warehouse and workshop, book a test drive online and a salesman comes to you in the car?

Dropped in to Sydney City Toyota yesterday and spoke with sales manager Anthony, who was really friendly and helpful. He stated and the 86 will be released in June and speculated a price of $39,990 + ORC.

According to Anthony all Toyota dealers are still in the dark about specs/prices. But there is a national dealer conference in early February where Toyota Aus will announce its 2012 product and roll-out plan. So until then, it's nothing but rumour.

He indicated a "handful" of people had placed deposits already, but they have been flooded with enquiries since the Nov international launch. Re availability, Anthony was hoping to secure as many 86's as he could for June, but was expecting to be allocated 5-15 cars per month after that.

I've decided to put down a "place-in-the-queue" deposit ASAP. I'm now just waiting to hear back from VW about my cancelled Polo GTI order before I take the plunge...
