I'm not a lawyer but Ill bet anything their disclaimer does not relenquish them of liability if under normal operation the door comes down on your roof.

Were you milking the dryer when this happened? Even if you were there should be a sensor when the car is under the door.

Your very last option could be a lawyer, for advice anyway.
That's what I'm planning to do, to call Esso rather than deal with the station directly

That's the thing, I've let it count down to zero before (and driven away right at zero as the blower shuts off) and the door has never closed, and even at zero someone's car should be expected to be safe (what if the car stalled or a person were standing under it for instance; it should be governed by sensors). I still had five seconds left on the timer this time and the blowers were still operating (I didn't even hear it hit, only felt it, because the sound was drowned out by the blowers), which was what was confusing since I know from past experience that even running the clock down shouldn't make the door close.

I can only speculate that the sensor malfunctioned and thought the car had driven out. My guess is with the car being so short, and I was drying the back windshield (which placed the door in the center of the roof), depending where their sensor is, perhaps it thought the car was gone.

The car wash doors work just like your garage door .. It has the same IR light .. Most of the new car washes have two sensors one is right at the bottom and other about half way .. Idk about this specific ESSO but if it's older it probably only has one right at the bottom and you stayed just in the that sweep spot where it triggered the door to come down .. Thinking you had already left ..
Either way that sweet spot should not exist..

Either way call customer relations .. And customer relations only .. Get the name of the rep and start a claim/file and get that number .. And ask to do the rest of the talking over email, this way you have something incase you end up on court .

And don't ever mention to them that you have brought this up to the forum and all, ask them you want them to fix it for you in a quiet manner or else you will take whatever action needed .

All these years I worked at the Shell for my uncle I know how these corporate a-holes go about .. You should hear the story I have about this poor Audi R8 .

you just KNOW that as soon as you do that, all of sudden yeah, they did have a security camera after all... with footage to convict you of arson.

Sucks what happened OP, hope you get some resolution from Esso.

That is why you get a bow and arrow to do it. Wrap the arrow tip in a rag that is soaked in kerosene, light, and shoot.

just kidding of course, lol

Glad that @mashal provided very useful help /advice from his experience which came from working with his uncle's Shell gas station(s).

Hope it works out within your favor at the end, OP...

Stateless,

I know it's a little too late but do you have any places that do a hand wash? I would highly recommend seeing if you can find one.

As for automatic touchless washes, some are okay. The ones that I used on my less important cars don't have doors that go up and down.
The pic that Jaylyons1 posted looks like a Shell station and many of them don't have a door. Many of them have doors that are made of heavy vinyl strips that open like curtains.
Reason I'm even mentioning this is I've had the same exact thing happen to me many years ago. I never had a resolution through them, but I resolved it on my own.

I has a sad for u...

Go in pretending to look for a job, and ask them when their manager is in because you want to personally give him your resume.

Show up on that day and rip him a new one.
