I have contacted Toyota.

Surprisingly enough, I caught them off guard to the fact that the oil specified for the 86 is a local OEM part number and a specific synthetic oil 5w/30.
I pointed out a concern that Toyota did not mention anything of this at the time of purchase and If i needed to top up and the guy at the garage filled with standard oil, this could potentially result in warranty issues if I used incorrect oil.
This was confirmed.
Toyota have a stock item in 1l for R95.06 5w/30, recommend this is kept for top up purposes. I advised them that they should supply a 1l with every new car.

Toyota advised do not mix any other viscosity of oil.

I have logged the complaint with TSA customer services and await response to confirm which other brand( Castrol, Bp) is recommended if we cannot get to a Toyota.

Be very careful recommending or using oil which is not authorized by Toyota, could have consequences.

Keep you posted.

Had a chat to my Dealer (always worth a chuckle that), they don't have any and the spares guys were clueless.

BUT, they will find the part # and get me some, I should have an answer in the next day or so. I will post the part # as soon as I get it.

I am surprised no response from TSA customer service.

1l oil arrives today.

My Toyota dealership Have sent me the service sheet for the 15000km service, which details the the 5w30 oil on the check list. Only concern is the mechanic ensuring this oil is used and not the oil from the feeder tank......
Can't attach the service sheet as it is PDF format, so if you want a copy which also details the part numbers, send me a PM with your mail address.

I received a call from Hillcrest Toyota, the enquiry I lodged has been confirmed as concern by Toyota and every dealership in Sa has or should have received notification regarding the oil.

Message I got this morning,
Do not use any other oil grade or brand, which is not a OEM 5w30, which is available or e route to your nearest dealership. Oil is sold in 1L units at R95.05, which will also be used during services. The engine takes 5.4l which would mean you should get 600ml after service as top up.

Further to the above. The 86 does use oil and expect to top up 2 or 3 pints between services, recommended to check oil every 1000km.

Booked mine in for a filter and oil change next week, as I am not happy that the oil used in SA is not the same as what comes from factory in Japan.

Cool, thanks.

Question though - surely they don't come empty from Japan and shouldn't have any "SA" oil in them?

I picked up my oil today, no wonder the service guys were confused, its labelled as "Diesel Engine Oil"

But great service from them in getting it here so quickly.

He'll I wonder if this is right.

I go for filter and oil change on Friday, decided to ensure correct oil used for SA.

I have not had any response yet to what oil is currently in the car from Japan. 0w20 is the talk, but nobody here knows.

Eish, that's not good. You could have the oil tested but that would probably cost more than 2x oil services.

Horrifying service from Toyota really. Maybe the curse of purchasing a new product, surely they would have prepared for such questions? Any news on the coolant? No longer the fabled pink coolant - now blue... Wondering if we should go to Subaru dealers to get it!

Coolant is not a issue, we have extremely good quality in SA.

I recall when the Fortuner was being launched, the service managers and the mechanics went on training and all knew the ins and outs of the vehicle.
Walking in to the Toyota dealership and me having to tell them about the 86 is not good.
We have to realize, 50 a month compared to over 1500 per month other models... So kind of don't blame them.
All we can do is get to know our own car in and out and ensure Toyota do what is required.
My opinion.

Actually not really, I'll see if I can get hold of Wearcheck or Spectracare, they're the oil testing labs here in ZA.

Also, on the coolant: not all coolants are created equal, there is some dodgy stuff doing the rounds. Make sure you only use manufacturer branded products, I have seen first hand (testing for a client) what cheap stuff can do to radiators!
