BMW uses an engine sound track through it's audio system. Why? Because tuning out offensive NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) is such a big deal these days that the cars have essentially become too quiet. So what did they do? Well, they found a way to pump the desired noises back into the passenger compartment without allowing the unwanted noises in also. Generally, the vast majority of modern cars are MUCH more insulated from NVH compared to their older counterparts. THAT is the real reason why we're starting to see all this sound tube stuff on newer cars. Hell, even the new 5.0 Mustangs have a sound tube, and that's a V8 car with dual exhaust and a factory cold-air intake.
Bmw uses that system because they suck. They want to sell the m5 to yuppies instead of true entusiasts who wouldnt mind a louder exhaust/intake and less refine sound insulation. The M badge lost its essence. They sold out big time.

I don't like it either, but that was the solution they chose to get more engine sounds back into the cabin. Sure, it's phoney and it sucks, but that wouldn't stop me from buying an M5, that's for sure. It's still an incredible car.

I actually don't mind the sound tube. On my past cars, they were quiet so I installed catback exhausts so I can "hear" things better. On this car, I think the sound is great with the tube paired with my AFE cold air intake. On the other hand, people who are complaining about the weight of the tube.........

Really hate the very idea of this trend.
Unless they have changed since the mkV platform, VW doesn't use the speakers to emulate engine sounds. Volkswagen has used a sound tube (justlike the GT86/FR-S/BRZ) on their engines since they started the mkV(unfortunately including the R32) Just a FYI

Starting with the 2011 GTI's, VW switched to a "soundaktor". Basically an electronic buzzing/vibrating device strapped to the firewall, causing it to resonate and generate fake engine noise.

I know, sounds odd. I might not have believed it, except I own the car.

flat out, I love my sound tube, it is for me, not schmucks on street. I would rather people pumped more sound into thier car than out pipes into my ears.

Not much different than back in the day when folks would flip the breather lid over on their 4 barreled engines. Myself included. Guess if I could have piped the sound into the car I'd considered it.

when you take out the stock tupe, you cvan just cut the foam in half to make a green tube from it. or pack it with tissue paper to block it and make a blue tube, or take all the foam out of it to make a red tube..
stock or green is probably the way to go.

Well after staring at the side by side for a good 5 mins I finally figured out what the hell you were talking about, since its such a small insignificant piece it took me a while to see. Especially with so many people saying " it makes the engine area look cleaner." It really doesn't. It's to small to make a difference unless your monk level OCD.

I dont mind. its a borderline orgasmic noise.

I dont plan on any big dollar upgrades (exhaust) for a while so the experience is blissful in the mean time. Until then, anything to add to the fun factor of the car is A-OK in my book. I dont plan on taking the car to shows, so a clutter-free engine bay and 2 lbs of added weight is not a priority of mine.
