stillen ‎(third-person singular simple present stillt, past tense stillte, past participle gestillt, auxiliary haben)

1. (transitive) to nurse, to breastfeed (a baby)
2. (transitive) to quench (a need, e.g. hunger)

OK, language lesson time. The root word of the verb stillen is the English cognate "still", which means, according to Cassell's German-English dictionary:

to silence, to quiet, to hush, appease, calm, sooth, mitigate, allay, stay, quench (thirst), staunch (blood), gratify, satisfy, nurse, suckle (a child).

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to understand why sticking a boob in a crying baby's face would quiet the child, but the main meaning of this verb is not "to nurse". BTW, "boob" is another English-German cognate, from the word "Bub" (pronounced the same as boob) meaning baby.

So you could "still" your thirst with a beer or a breast. Whichever is your preference!

I once knew a young girl with the unfortunate last name "Lipschitz". It doesn't mean the same thing in German as it does in English...

Yeah, but with that name, who cares what it means in German? I knew a woman who had a more unfortunate last name, Swallows.

True. There was a famous daughter of the first native-born governor of Texas (Stephen S. Hogg) whose name was (and I am not making this up) "Ima Hogg". She became an accomplished concert pianist and eventually moved to Germany because noone there cared what her name meant. (Also, she wasn't fat.) The Houston Symphony still hosts the annual "Ima Hogg Piano Competition."
