Don't believe the salesman talk - they are not "pre-run in". Can you imagine what that would cost them to do?

60 km sounds like a couple test drives to me.

most Toyota sales people don't know about the 1600km run in, as this is not a requirement on any other Toyota models, and they tend to forget that its a Subaru motor in the 86 although it says Toyota on the hood

That is true, cause when I got my car I asked about run in, they said it wasn't necessary, while the manual states other wise, I did do the 1600km run in, and I'm really happy I did

Run in period is more than just about the engine, most vehicles state in their manual to take it easy for the first 1500km. This cam gear issue does not have to do with over revving however. My vehicle has never been over 4000rpm, and if it was this was done by Toyota themselves when testing. This would mean all vehicles had been over 4000rpm and therefore the same problem. After speaking with a toyota representative of the 86 during my vehicle repairs he stated that all these failed cams are been inspected to establish if there is a better solution i.e a recall to prevent this happening. Main thing here though is that if you notice any RPM dip or engine check light to have it checked ASAP by toyota and insist that it happened even if the check light or misfire, low rpm disappear. We will have to see how many more vehicles over time have this issue and if any repaired ones have a recurring symptom.

mine did it at les than 200km (gunned it on the demo and with every one that wanted me to take them for a spin), they kept resetting ecu, but at 600km i was fed up and insisted in a new car, they then decided that TRD must step in and they repaired it with an other 86's cam gear that was on the floor and since then, no problem and im almost at 5000km
