it was me, according to the guys from TRD that worked on my car, the spring inside the VVTi cam gear got stuck in the advanced position because it hadent had time to seat properly in its moving path, hence the 1600km drive in at various RPM, and engine oil needs to be at operating temp before going over 4000rpm always.

I have asked toyota to have a look at the parts changed and they have agreed, want to see exactly how this spring operates and where/how it could fail, will post an update when I see the parts hopefully tomorrow.

there is a metal plate on the face of the Cam gear, the spring is located under it, and it caused the cam to get stuck in advance

They have confirmed today that it is one of the cam gears and have received the part so will hopefully get car back by tomorrow. This to me would not be a fuel problem though, it is definately to do with timing. Previous experience with bad fuel has been a jerky vehicle throughout rev range. They did also confirm the error code of P0019.
Sucks them having to pull the entire front of the engine apart so early in life. I was not happy when they did mine for the cel issue.

Sent from my flux capacitor using Taptalk

Oil weight (or thickness if you will) have a huge impact on oil pressure - just saying

that's also true, and the thickness also has to do with the running temp of the oil, lets just say that the engine in our 86's are very sensitive ,

0W30 straight from the factory, don't think we can even get that in ZA. Waiting to see who gets the lucky first service to find out what to use!

that would be interesting, they did however have to drain my oil when they replaced the Cam Gear, will find out what oil they put back in.

I would like to see how this spring is sticking though, is it failing or jamming? It really is sad to have to change bits on an engine so early. @v3rgil, after your repair did they extend your service plan as I am going to demand this. Its not that I don't trust the car its the workmanship by Toyota technicians. After previous bad experiences with tech's from numerous manufacturers this is by far the biggest worry. Not quite sure how well or if they have done any training on this vehicle. I will also ask about oil when I get car back today.

Hey guys an update for you. Got the car back on Friday and going really well. Very interesting to see the old gear, rather simple design so wonder if this will be changed in future. Got extended service plan, full tank of fuel, 86 jacket and cap, box of chocolates and flowers for the missus. Car feels so different and low down torque seems much better so must have had an issue from when I got car. Glad to be back on the road.
