That was the only flaw that I found in an otherwise quality product.
I wonder how it will last without paint there?

for paint chips I just filled them in with some 209 black touch-up paint I found lying around; the touch-up paint turned out perfect on the struts.

Hey everyone, the paint chipping at the top of the struts isn't as a result of stress or anything like that, it comes as a result of the assembly and shipping process of the gas springs before they even arrive to us. When the first shipment arrived to us, I stayed late and went through the first 500 and touched the tops up myself while trying to figure out the problem. We contacted the manufacturer, and they agreed to package and ship them in a different manor. This prevented chipping, but did not eliminate it. We still go through each and every strut and touch up the top.

However, I was able to figure out exactly what was happening. The release pin that holds the ball stud into the socket (that some people have been poked by) is the culprit. So, I changed the design of the ball and socket joint to have a different retention clip that should eliminate this problem 100% for future orders.

So once again I must thank the community for helping out and helping us eliminate these kind of issues before the product launches. If you have chips on your struts (or on anything that isn't stainless steel or aluminum regardless of if we sold it to you or not) make sure to touch them up to prevent rust.

I recommend semi gloss black touch up paint, but flat and gloss will look just fine too. Thanks again to everyone, and let us know if you love them, hate them, just think they're okay, or want to order 32 more sets, just to roll around on top of.

I still love mine every time I take my car to the wash. I lift up the hood to dry around the edge and it's just so nice to lift and let go without having to prop it up!

The wheels are all in motion! I'm working on something RIGHT NOW. As soon as I am to the appropriate phase in the project you all will be the first to know, promise!

Also, we're still waiting on our new 10mm bolts for the lower mount, and will post up as soon as we get those to individuals who may have broken theirs. So Lee, you will have false hopes at least one more time, but I promise we will reveal our newest project soon!

For those of us that purchased the struts earlier and want those upgraded bolts. Is there an ETA in when w might expect them mailed to us? Thanks.

We'll be shipping them out in new kits, and to individuals who need them (broke a bolt from overtightening/crossthreading). We won't be shipping them to everyone who has already purchased the kit, because of how isolated the issue is and that almost all users have had no problems during the installation. Just let us know if you want or need them after we post up saying we've received the new bolts, and we'll send them out.

Again, for anyone who missed the previous post: Hand thread the bolt in, and then torque to 7.5ftlbs, and there should be no issue. However, if you're interested in sourcing the bolt before we can get them here, it will be a 6mmx1.00mm 20mm length flange bolt.

And I have been talking to my supplier this morning about that as well, so right this minute I do not have an ETA. I'm hoping to have this information by tomorrow. I'll post up as soon as I know! If anyone is waiting to install their kits, there is nothing wrong with the factory bolt, just do not over torque it (7.5 ftlbs)

WE GOT BOLTS!!!

Alright it's not that exciting, but we can pretend right?

Again, these are replacement bolts for the lower strut mounts, and are not absolutely necessary if you have already ordered the kit. We will include them from now on, but if you need these replacements right now send an email to:

sales@grimmspeed.com

with a subject line of "Need Replacement Hood Strut Bolts." Include your name and address, and we'll mail them out right away.

I just installed my GS Hood Struts and I think many thanks are in order!

The overall quality appears to be quite good, on a black car they seem as though they've already been there from the factory (which, imo, is good)
Handling is great, the wider opening achieved is promising to be a great help during maintenance. However, if forced to find one imperfection it'd be the stopper at max extension: that could have been somewhat softer.

BTW I've experienced the issue w/ the lower bolts, too.
Felt like the threads were being milled off. I just stopped fastening when it seemed appropriate but new bolts might be a good idea as a long-term solution...

What do you guys at GrimmSpeed think about using some Loctite? Might be a general security option worth mentioning in your guides?!
