I thought it might have been hotspots on my rotors from uneven transfer, so after the first session I actually took them off and used steel wool/sandpaper and brake cleaner to polish everything back down. Re-bedded them in and they were slightly better, but not much.

Run some dedicated brake ducts...

Definitely not the worst idea. Can't hurt. Although you said your temps really weren't all that bad

I'm suggesting to do some simple mods that don't really cost a pretty penny to do, as well as, put you in an awkward situation of doing some trial and error to figure out what you bought will work or not. Brake ducts help decrease rotor temps slightly lower on average, which means your brake pads and fluid will last longer during sessions. This will also mean (depending on your pad operating temp range) that your pads can stay within the optimal operating temp range, decreasing number of times you run into brake fade issue (that lovely glass feeling when you hit the brakes and you're not slowing down despite having a firm pedal).

Here in California, CSG has done some pretty extensive driving out on the local tracks on multiple vehicles with various brake, tire, suspension, and power setups. We hope to impart some setup knowledge and experience that can only be gained from actual trial and error, on our part, to the FT86 community so everyone can enjoy what this car was developed for without hassling with setups that may lead to disappointment (which happens more often than one may think).

To answer the OP's question, since this was pretty removed from the topic is to just pick up some quality blank discs. Cryo treated rotors or BBK isn't the way to go especially if you're still stuck on the stock Michelins. We ran these brakes from 130-40mph stops consistently from lap to lap. I'm pretty sure that dedicated track pads, high quality DOT4 fluid, and OE rotors will be fine. Added bonus would be brake ducting to help prolong the life of your braking system (and suspension joints!).

I've been down this road before. Sand paper/steel wool simply isn't robust enough or effective enough to remove the bad pad deposits and return the rotor face back to a true and flat surface. The only way to restore the rotor is to have turned. Find a good machine shop that has the "rotor turning machine" and they can set it up so it only takes off the very surface (the deposits). You'll see instantly what I'm talking about as to why steel wool and sand paper simply don't cut it.

I showed up to my parts store/machine shop and set a bag with 6 rotors on the counter and said, "I got 6, what deal can you give me?". He turned them for $14/rotor. Much better than buying new!

Just bought a pair of front DBA4000s, we will see how they hold up. Got them from bestbrakes.com. Any order over $250 qualifies for $20 off, so ended up at $270 shipped.

FRIDAY10 gets $10 off $150+
FRIDAY20 gets $20 off $250+
FRIDAY50 gets $50 off $500+

Figured I would share the loves

My back-up pair of Premium Centric front rotors (non-cyro) completed its shipping to my home this afternoon.

Thanks again for the continued advice and help within this thread...

Will be ordering Carbotech XP10/10 combo (front & rear) after the DS2500's are installed... Am keeping the pre-loved pads that I luckily won in the raffle presented by @Dave-ROR as back-up (XP10/8). Thanks, Dave!

Meanwhile, here are some images of the pretty rotors I recieved:

The XP10/XP8 should last you quite awhile especially since you're still on stock Michelins. Don't forget to upgrade brake fluid!

Brake fluid is already upgraded to RBF600. I'll be upgrading to the Star Spec tires in a few more months... You think I should still be in good shape with the upgraded tires?

I guess I'll try it out one step at a time...

You should be fine. As you get quicker, you may run into trail braking issues. Until then, just keep toying with the limit of the car. Once you kill the XP10/XP8 combo, XP10 F/R should be good. Let me know when the time comes.

Sounds like a plan... Appreciate your feedback, David.

Cryostop rotors are awesome! We are big believers in cryo treatment, having tested a variety of rotors on a Hummer H1, the cryo rotor lasted 30-50% longer. For track use these are perfect and should last a few sets of pads.

We stock them, feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions. Chas@tapautoparts.com
