I've revived this old thread because I think it's still very topical, and many new owners could be unhappy with how the SA spare wheel spec is - which IMO is terrible.
Many of us have probably done a "maak 'n plan" regarding the spare wheel and boot, and it would be nice to share that.

So please upload pics if you've been there and done that...

Here's mine...
I stole my wife's marie biscuit spare wheel from her Impreza and, with some minor violence, we fitted my full-size spare into her spare wheel well.
I made a plywood cover and covered it with carpet. It's got three small wooden blocks underneath (front and each side) to locate it properly and stop it sliding around. Together with the spare wheel are my triangles, top-up oil, buffing mitt, picnic blanket, and "Toyota Book of Life" which puts the glove compartment back into use again.
Book of Life and oil aren't in the pic, but they fit in OK in the right side of the spare.
