There are so many decent options out there that buying a brand new FT86 just to swap the engine and then having to replace every part of the drivetrain to withstand the new power doesnīt sound logical.

265hp would have meant more weight (turbocharged or bigger displacement engine, stronger gearbox, bigger brakes), more complexity, and of course higher costs.
It's consistent argument here on the forum.
"I want Turbo in this car" & "This car needs 300hp or I won't buy it" so on...
vs
"This car doesn't need high hp, as long as it's lightweight" & "I want affordable FR car" so on...

Ever since this site have been around, it'll keep going on and on, til production ver come out... maybe even then still have this war.

If someone wants and expects a 300hp turbocharged FT86, he doesnīt understand the philosophy behind this particular car, and hasnīt taken the time to read any of the interviews to its designers.

Just to help them out, please read this:
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/201...hief-engineer/

"We did a lot of research. We talked to owners, fanatics, real buyers of sports cars around the world. They told us: Speed isn’t everything. If it’s just an incredibly fast car, they don’t really want it. What they want is a sports car that is small, compact, light, and that handles just the way they want it to handle.”

“The super-super-super fast cars are only for the super-rich. Even most super-rich don’t want to buy them. The people I talked to were looking for something like the 80s kind of a sports car, echoes of an AE86. They wanted a stripped-down, basic sports car with the price more like that of a piece of sports equipment, not the price of a house. Those people wanted something that doesn’t exist.”

To be fair, its all about what you want. Does it make more sense to just get the Genesis coupe instead of swapping out an engine? Sure it does. But will it won't be a FR-S/FT-86, it will be a Genesis. If you can afford it I say get what ever you want and do what ever you want, regardless of the point of the car. My main hobby is radio controlled model cars and aircraft. In the past I have spent hundreds of dollars on little things that I can drive or fly but not actually sit in. I have these fleeting moments asking myself "Why am I doing this?!". It's what I can afford and I'm having fun. Same reason I modded my Yaris. It's just a Yaris, its not fast but its what I have, and its actually a lot of fun to drive and a lot cheaper than buying something new.

To me it's all about what you want. I am all about the affordable FR sports car. Affordable to buy, insure, and gas up. November 30th can't come soon enough. Sadly I think I will probably end up waiting till the 2013 model year to buy, just for financial reasons.

redline at 7.500 RPM is 100 % sure. Any higher would be nice, but I doubt it. No way it redlines at 7.000 RPM, that is wat my 4 banger Alfa 147 does.
It'll be rated at peak power, so if that's 200ps @7k then at 8 and 8.5k it's going to fall on it's face. The only reason to rev it past 7k would be to stay in the power band on shifts.

I hope redline is, at the minimum, 8000. Although I could see them doing 7 or 7.5k

I agree.

And people get blinded by horsepower, as if it actually means anything for the driving experience.

Don't get me wrong, I like flooring 500hp cars too, but they are never cars that I actually want to drive on a daily/regular basis and they are RARELY fun to drive when you aren't beating the crap out of them.

Personally I'll take a blast to drive 98% of the time and thinking "Damn I wish it had more power" the remaining 2% of the time I'm trying to pass cars on straights, compared to always having that power and 80% of the time not enjoying the car as much as I would with that slower car.

With proper gearing you can have plenty of around town torque, the problem with low torque is being able to pass without downshifting first. You can drive around all day long with low torque if you know how to drive it correctly. All of my cars have low torque numbers and none of them bother me.

Also a lot of the good JDM subaru motors rev to 8k.

The worst max RPM for me is maybe 7500 but I'd prefer 8-8.5.
haha, owning a high revving honda 4 pot, in the last generation Prelude, I see that we both love high revving engines. I don't think that it'll get past the 7k redline, maybe 7.5k, but that's aiming high. I wouldn't worry tho, this is a boxer 4, it's a different beast altogether, sounds great, and it's direct injected with the help of Yamaha to boot.

as for specs:

200 HP
145 torques
2700 pounds
liftback
around 20k dollars.

That will make me write a nice check for one almost on the spot. I just hope the headlights don't look too bad, I want a maserati gransport look, thanks...
