Next Step!

Okay, I've managed to get access to the connector that is at the front of the shifter mechanism as Pozer pointed out in the previous post. Now I am trying to figure out which wires exactly are the one I need to reverse. The previous posts from Paul at P&L Motorsports mentions both the black AND white wires as needing to be reversed. Pozer mentioned only the two black wires. One thing I noticed is that the two black wires look like they both lead to the same momentary switch on the (-)downshift switch. Which means that the white wires are for the (+)upshift switch?

So then, looking at the pictures below that show the junction box showing all the connections for the black and white wires, do I swap the wires so that I plug in the black wires where the white wires were plugged in and vice versa? What about the two wires of the same color? The two black wires and the two white wires need to be plugged in the same way or does it matter which socket it plugs into as long as it's plugged in either socket that was for the original colored wire?

Hope this doesn't end up confusing it more. But I would greatly appreciate your guys help. Thanks again!!

Thanks!

Hey JoeBoxer,

Thanks for letting me know about the thread for the kit from BeatSonic. I didn't know that there would be a kit required to reverse the +/- wiring. All I knew about this +/- re-wiring topic was this thread, so I thought it was a fairly simple DIY, the way Paul from P&L Motorsports had posted. I wonder what the kit does in order to reverse the +/- wiring. Anyways, hope someone is having more success than I am having. Opening up one console is starting to lead to another console of worms.

Pozer:

I have a couple of links to some threads on FT86CLUB.com that shows detailed step by step pictures on how to remove the center console. I will find them and post the shortcuts to the link to the threads. Basically, the center console is held in place by six screws: two under the storage compartment (just remove the rubber mat & you'll see the two screws), two screws under the VSC/TRAC OFF/SPORT&SNOW switch (you'll see them when you remove the shifter boot trim), & and two screws behind the USB/AUX mini storage compartment (this is the most trickiest to remove, at least it was for me). I had to remove the side sill panels that are below the knee pads (they're snapped in & not screwed on so they simply pull out) in order to push the USB/AUX connection socket. The actual mini storage shelf/compartment was very difficult and gave me a conniption fit trying to pull the thing out. It's held by six snap on tabs. I chipped the top two tabs trying to yank it out, so be careful. It would be best to first check out the threads that show the pictures of the center console being removed, before you go at it. Reading what I just wrote hopefully didn't confuse you more. Best of luck!

Update from my previous post.

Pozer:

Here are the two links to the threads that helped me the most. The pictures are going to help you heck of a lot more than all that rambling I wrote earlier.

www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13583

www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15558

One thing I forgot to mention was the side brake. You won't be able to completely remove the center console unless you remove the side brake cover from the brake lever (as you'll see in the pictures from the thread links above). But for what I needed to do, which was to take a look at the junction box of the wires, I left the side brake alone. The brake cover has enough play for the center console to be pushed back enough for me to take a look at that little pin connector junction box in front of the shifter mechanism and take pictures of it.

DIY...yeah, about that....

It seems a lot of people want someone to post a DIY for this +/- shift reverse wiring. I was hoping (and still hoping) that Paul from P&L Motorsports would be posting a DIY as he mentioned on his previous post. But I don't know if he has dropped off the face of the earth or maybe just busy. At first, the beginning of the this thread seemed to make this re-wiring sound fairly simple, but as I dig deeper and peel another layer from the onion, I'm finding more layers... I was thinking that it was a simple operation, but after Pozer pointed out the junction box, it looks like a jumble maze of wires.

Reminds me of a movie I watched somewhere. "Do I cut the red wire or the blue wire...?" Last thing I want to do is put it in reverse and ram my new FR-S in to the living room.

From the Wiring Diagram...

I've circled what appears to be the two best places to swap the wiring.

Just got back from swapping the wires.

Here's a quick & dirty how-to.
  1. Remove the filler/cubby above the shifter surround and disconnect its wiring.
    .
  2. Remove the shifter surround, unscrew the shift knob, and disconnect its wiring.
    .
  3. Loosen the E-Brake surround from the center console
    .
  4. Remove center console and disconnect its wiring. (Screws 6 places: two under filler/cubby, two under shifter surround, two under cup-holder).
    .
  5. Identify the junction connector located at top of shifter assembly. Slide it to the right while pushing in the tab to detach it from the assembly.
    .

    .
  6. Disconnect the Junction Connector from the wiring harness. We're going to be working with the shifter side of the junction connector. Here's a 'before' picture with the pairs of wires you need to swap identified.
    .

    .
  7. Depin, Swap & Repin the wire pairs. Be sure to lift up the flap identified in the first picture before you begin. You'll need something tiny (like a precision screwdriver) to reach in from the connector side to lift up the plastic retainer that holds the wire/pin in place. When you're done your Connector should look like this:
    .

    .
  8. Follow steps 1-7 in reverse order.
Done.

Tip: Don't bother trying to test the shifter function before reassembly until you've reconnected the shifter-surround wiring... save yourself the panic... it wont let you go into 'M' mode until you've reconnected everything.
