Sweet thats what I thought but I didn't have a calc to look at the diameter when I posted that

I'm using Continental Extreme Contact DW 225x45x17. LOVE THEM

great balance of handling and grip and feel good in the wet too. Good tread life and they are very light too.

However I had to get them from the US because an Australian dealer was out fo stock for a while. Was happy overall because I paid about $900AUD for 4.

Otherwise I was going to get Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2.

I would NOT recommend Falken FK452s after having them on my MR2 for a while. Tread life wasn't great and i felt the handling went away significantly toward the end. Not worth the money in my experience.

There are a lot of massive tyre sizes being suggested in this thread, I can't understand why you would want to 'over tyre' the car to such a degree?

It can't be for traction for the street, as the car doesn't need any more. If you think it does, you should reconsider why you have a light rwd or learn how to drive.

If its for track traction, then a high end/semi-slick 205's will have far more grip than a massive street tyre, and they are cheaper!

If its for looks/stance, you don't have to ruin the car's handling by putting on a 9.5" rim and 255+ tyre. An 8' rim with around +25 will look exactly the same (give or take) as a 9.5" rim with +38. Play around with an offset calculator to get exacts.

I've ordered a base 86 because I think the 16's are decent. The 17's are hideous. Yes, the 205/55 tyres have a huge profile, but 205/50,205/45,205/40 tyres would fix that. I am even considering 195/50's as this offers a good balance with respect to profile and economics. (205/45/16 and 205/40/16 are rare and twice the price of a 195/50/15)

I think the car with stock power is 'over-tyre'd' with a 215.

If I go FI I will go 17x8 with either a 205/40 or 215/40 tyre. It will be a forged rim (too many on this site are putting heavy 18" rims on their cars - again ruining the handling, but thats another rant for another thread.)

I've owned many street cars in various power levels and drivetrains. The car that was the most fun was a 180sx with 200rwkw. It ran 205/50/16 tyres on R32 M-spec (v.light) wheels. This is the setup I will be looking to replicate with the 86.

No doubt this post will in-flame many. There is a lot of hard-parking already happening on here.

But, at the end of the day. It's your car, do what you like to it. I respect that different people have different taste. I would at least ask that what I have said be put forward as another opinion about tyres and the 86.

A vote for Bridgestone RE070 here. 225 45 17, $270 each can't go wrong. There were the OEM tyre on the my05-my07 STI's.

Totally depends on what you are going for but with the power I have in mind 215 section tyres are just not enough width for getting the power down also stretched size tyres is totally dangerous and a common place these days and 235 section tyre on a 9" or 9.5" rim is not to be considered safe specially when insurance companies are concerned. I am going the 265 rear tyre width to give that staunch on a lightweight rim. I believe with 225 - 250rwkw this is a nice size match for the power. I also need the larger rims to fit the 4 piston Brembos under there too.

Possibly turning the car into a drifter the skinnier rear tyres will aid with the lower power in being more consistent to slide but Im not going this way.

Grippy, but one of the heaviest tyres known to man.

Yes, you can feel it too.

Yes I agree. Although I think despite all the talk, less than 5% of 86 owners will take there cars to this level, that justifies such a tyre.

Edit - Also FYI most tyre manufacturers permit a 235/45/17 being put on a 9" rim. I certainly wouldn't class that as stretched.

265mm is over 10 inches. So it's going to balloon out on a 9 inch rim. Well, not literally. Saying that it's going to balloon out is like saying that a 235/45 is stretching - fact is that both sizes on a 9 inch rim are fine.

Again, depends on what you are looking for.

It's ok I have enough killawasps on board. I can't get these tyres to lose traction short of using anti lag. Previous tyres would light the rears in third gear.

595 RS-R are on the CAMS Production car tyre list with the other simi slick R tyres.

I raced on them with the VE but they are slower than Dunlops and Yoko R specs by quite a margin. I can say they do last but were scary in the wet !!
A cheap ballance for a track day tyre so long as you are aware of rain. The will develope a cut look along the join line which is a bit sus.
