Next Friday I plan on doing the drive pictured below. I mapped it out after finding part of the drive on SundayMorningRides.com. Google clocks it in at 291 miles, taking about 7.5 hours to complete. I anticipate it will take more like 10 hours, with lunch and photo ops in between. Some off the road appears to be 'hard packed dirt', but with luck I will have mud guards installed by then, and I don't anticipate anything the BRZ/FR-S couldn't handle with ease.

Was originally going to do this with a friend, but he is no longer able to make it, so I thought I'd throw it up here to see if anyone else is interested. Always good to adhere to the buddy system when traveling the unknown :happy0180:

I know most of you probably can't do a 10 hour drive on a Friday, but unfortunately this is the only opportunity I have to do this, as I work most weekends. For those of you that can't make it, feel free to run with it on another day! I plan to time-lapse record the entire drive and will post it here when I'm done.

Let me know if you are interested!

Have you ever taken the 88 on the dirt? Typically trucks take it all the time, its a fairly common backroad (and i mean BACK ROAD as its not even paved) to the lake. I have hard of people taking some cars, but I have never gone past the first rest stop (a toilet hanging off a cliff with no utilities). It was lots of fun at stock height with "sports mode" turned on, however I don't know how many dips and the quality past that point and would be afraid to go that route on the return. Make sure to bring plenty of water incase something happens, depending on the time of the day during the week you might have to wait a while before a truck comes down it, as there is no cell phone reception on that portion.

Also the 260 is not as fun as it looks, stay the speed limit. Trust me... my friend just has hid car impounded for a complete bullshit reason and had to drive back and forth multiple times trying to get it out. Its not worth the effort to deal with the small town cops in that region, play it safe till a bit past Show Low.

I would love to go but i am fairly confident i cannot make the 88 dirt road at my curent ride height. I might have better luck considering i just raised the rear a bit (larger tires) but I don't think it will end well for me haha.

I believe so. It goes along the 88 next to the Salt River anyways.

I hear you on the 260. I received a ticket up there but thankfully, no impound. I'm still at stock height or I probably wouldn't go myself. I was really looking for just a long fun drive. I'd thought about taking a drive up Mt. Lemmon, but half of that drive is all freeway. I will probably do it someday, but only when I have something else to do down south. I've never been on the dirt part of the 88 (or the 288 for that matter). If I find some time between now and next Friday I may roll out there just to check it out. I don't plan on driving the BRZ like it's an STI out there though, as fun as that might be, lol.

I would recommend this route, I take it pretty much yearly (and then portions of it many many times a year!):
[ame="https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=phoneix&daddr=34.0626645,-112.8191977+to:prescott+to:34.7496035,-112.1012449+to:sedona+to:payson+to:phoenix&hl=en&l l=34.170908,-111.860046&spn=1.679269,2.683411&sll=34.158979,-112.083305&sspn=1.679495,2.683411&geocode=Fblh_gEd y-JR-SnLeaFQ7RIrhzGsG0o1-MdpjA%3BFUjBBwIdA4RG-SkR7Imv5EfTgDGojfYXSH_Obg%3BFfgJDwId6t1L-SnrfHEA1CgthzHd_u5S5z2kCQ%3BFaM8EgIdhHhR-SmDlSSq_RAthzHxXA2qAKHCkQ%3BFewRFAIdoqlW-SkNsEL5MqEthzH9jmz6I8VIVQ%3BFVRSCgIdMFBd-Sl9Gj5q3RAshzEv2jpY_PjgjQ%3BFblh_gEdy-JR-SnLeaFQ7RIrhzGsG0o1-MdpjA&mra=ls&via=1,3&t=m&z=9"]phoneix to Phoenix, AZ - Google Maps[/ame]

you can extend the sedona part a bit and its supsidly realyl nice ont he way up to flagstaff but i have not been on that route yet.

Also check out the devils run (highway 666). The local S2000 group is doing a trip there in september. We are making a 3 day trip... im uber stoked!

I recommend stopping at Prescott and eating lunch at the Prescott brewery, try the acholypse beer. Its fantastic. Hell... bring me some back. lol. If you are a beer fan sedona has a wonderful brewery.

I drove this sometime last year (October, maybe) on a GTI and the dirt section from Tortilla flat to Roosevelt Dam is not hard-packed. Plus, there are some dips where you really have to slow down if not driving an off-road vehicle. I wouldn't take the FR-S/BRZ there myself.

Ditto on the suggestion from nelsmar above. I've driven 89 all the way to Flagstaff and it's nice, but north of Sedona is a more relaxed drive than getting there.

I can concur, the 88 past tortilla flats gets real interesting real quick, itd be worse than that time last year when we all accidentally drove on that gravel road near Lake Mormon during that period of road construction.

Its very fun in a properly setup Impreza or Evo, though.

I can vouch for 89/89A in/around Prescott. The road through White Spar and Mingus are some of the best in the state, but I did recently get a very hefty speeding ticket up there for doing 80+ in a 45 zone. D:

Keep it slow on the yarnell hill. Its not worth it, there is a pair of officers that patrol from there to prescott and typically keep on the ill most of the time. The spars however... mmmm.

Did you get a ticket on the spars or yarnell hill? I had to go fight a speeding ticket from my motorcycle on the yarnell hill once. >.<

I'm leaving Tucson on Thursday and spending the night in Laughlin. Looking forward to a neat week-end.
