I don't think you can recover the amount you spend on the gears or final drive in gas savings

You can recover the amount in sheer fun factor if you change the gears out not considering a change in mpg

Valid point. Maybe I am making a mountain out of a molehill.

And you might not be. The automatic gets way better mpg because of a taller 6th gear. I don't know enough to say whether or not something else/more economical can be done. Keep asking man

True. I really hope a company does come out with a 6th gear replacement. There is absolutely no reason why one can't both enjoy the sportiness that this coupe was designed for and the fuel efficiency that comes from using such a small displacement engine.

sure anything can be done with enough money

and the reality is that one gear wont be that expensive

i mean if you're that invested you can get an engineering firm to make you a replacement gear in the size you want

however the sheer downtime and getting someone who knows manual boxes to open it up and the ensuing potential warranty issues

the easier way would be to look at replacing the final drive with something a bit taller

apparently they are the same as the Lexus IS200/300 etc.

i dont think it would adversely affect acceleration too much but that's where research comes in

Opening the transmission and replacing the gear is no problem. The problem would be getting the gear.

The problem with the final drive is that I'd need a pretty tall final drive to give me the overall ratio that I want. That, in turn, would drastically hurt acceleration.

I would think that a taller rear gear would work better in boosted applications. The more torque you have, the less gear you need, and it would help fuel economy too, I believe. Maybe after the car's been out a while and people start getting more power out of them the market will offer different gear sets.

True, but by the time one boosts their car and slaps on a taller final drive, compensation takes place. You take a little from here, add a little there, and you're back to where you were in the beginning (performance-wise). It's a lot of work for little payoff.

The benefit of simply swapping out 6th gear is that you aren't sacrificing performance for fuel efficiency. Rather, you have both with one simple addition.

you guys are funny, I get 20 to 22 MPG, best I got was 30 on break in road trip and that was only on one tank, the other 2 or 3 tanks I got about 27.

I'd love to see what people think spirited driving is...I habitually keep the rpm above 4, unless im already at speed on the fwy there's no go anywhere else.

Honestly I can relate to the OP's POV though at 80mph (fwy speed afaiac) the motor is turning 3500

It's not that I am against spirited driving. I love thrashing this car around the bends, but when I'm on the highway at 75-80 mph, I'd love it if it would rev below 3,000 rpm.

I'm simply trying to have the best of both worlds.

There are multiple brands with track tested final drive sets and differentials available from Japan.

From AutoFactory, Arrows, Max Racing, and more.

Visit our Driveline Catalog and look for our weekly update tomorrow with new limited slip differentials, final drive kits, and more!

As of right now, I'm not looking to replace the final drive or rear differential. I am looking for a taller 6th gear replacement.

A gearbox shop can mill the 6th gear or turn a new one.
It's not very uncommon to do this in Germany since many cars from Japan have this overdrive gear which destroys fuel economy on the autobahn (you tend to always drive in 5th gear because 6th has too low rpm).
