I figure that less then 25% of the population knows how to drive car with a manual transmission.
Haha oh dear, had no idea about that
Why do people prefer autos? The only autobox i do enjoy is the DSG found in various Volkswagen cars

Not sure. At one point I think there was a sense of prestige associated with owning and automatic transmission. There are so few manuals on the roads that learning how to drive one takes an effort. Also unlike Europe, many cars can only be purchased with Autos, further making an standard transmission a rare bird.

I also do enjoy the DSG system.

Yeah. What I find humerous is that when I started driving 100 (maybe 99.9)% knew how to drive manuals because that was all an average person could afford. There were a few automatics around but they were reserved for the very wealthy.

Now, today, there are so many automatics on the street that those that know how to drive a manual think they now belong to an exclusive fraternity that only a select few are able to appreciate. Pretty funny.

No it won't, higher altitude puts in less dense air, thus pre-detonation is less of a concern. All octane does is prevent early detonation. 91 up at Denver altitude is like 93 at sea level. That's why you get less power at higher altitudes as well.
