Edmunds target launch

Depends on how you look at it. I always take quarterly release annoucements to mean the first month of that period, and Winter is Dec, Jan and Feb (March has never been winter). So I read it as Dec 2012, you read it as Jan/Feb 2012, both are technically winter in the year 2012, just two different winters.

I would assume that if the mag/edmunds meant a jan 2012 release they would have printer "Early 2012 release" like most people..

I think its plausible. I think a simultaneous worldwide release of the FT86 is hard for Toyota right now, so seeing it arrive in the USA a little later than Japan makes sense. We def will not get it before Japan thats for sure.

If if the Toyota version comes in the summer next year, I wouldn't be surprised if it came late 2012. It would only make sense if it came later if the exteriors will be different.

My goal is to try to pick my VIN with the colour, etc. How awesome would that be? VIN ends in 86, "FT 86" license plate, etc.

I'm hoping Tada-san makes his rounds to all the distributors so I get a chance to chat with him. Maybe get a signature somewhere on the car.

I would say the chances of the common person being able to get a VIN that ends in 86 on purpose/special request is almost nill. A) there will be a too many people requesting that # B) Toyota just doesn't have the man power to meet everyones demand C) What motivation does Toyota have to create this headache for themselves? There will be more than enough people interested in the car for them to sell (if they hit the rumors floating around). So someone will still by the VINs that end in 85 and 87 along with all the other numbers.

What makes you think I am common? I am in a unique position working for a Toyota distributor.

It's not about creating headaches for anyone, it's a matter of me looking up a VIN allocated for Canada that ends in 86, seeing what colour it is, and determining if I want it or not.

Exactly you aren't common if you work for Toyota.

So for every 100 cars you are going to be willing to accept 1 car to get the 86 number VIN. That comes out to 1% of the cars meeting your requirement. Throw in 5-6 colors, manual vs. auto, and different packages and options and your list of potential cars starts shrinking. If you work for Scion/Subaru, you would get an inside scoop on inventory before it hits land. The common person won't get that advantage. Depending how picky one is on color, transmission and options, less than 0.5% per 100 cars would fit what they would want. It isn't like you can just call up Toyota and say "I want a white, auto, dark interior, options A, C and D with VIN ending in 86." Now if you don't care about color, transmission or options, you chance of getting a car with VIN ending in 86 goes up to 1%. Now lets say that for every 100 cars, you have 1-2 guys that want the 86 number car. Things start getting more competitive and your chances start decreasing.

You're absolutely right. I'm not saying the chances are good, I'm just saying if it is possible I will do what I can to make it happen for myself.

It's marginal, but Scion doesn't have "real" option packages, or multiple interior colours so all I have to really worry about is colour and transmission.

Already decided.

I would guess the possible VIN's for this car (6 spd manual):

JT1FT86CxCLxxxx86: Toyota (JT1) FT86C (coupe), build 2012 (C), and 6 spd manual (L).

or

JF1216ACxCLxxxx86: Subaru (JF1) 216AC (coupe), build 2012 (C), and 6 spd manual (L).

What do you think?

Yeah, I take news from Edmunds with a grain of salt, tbh. When I saw a winter 2012 release I remembered the official word being a 2012 model year car (or am I wrong?), I assumed early 2012. If it was released at the end of December 2012 that would make it a 2013, woulnd't it? They should use quarters not seasons. Q1 or Q4, make up your damn minds Edmunds.

Just curious about the 0086 in the VIN number discussion. Who cares what the VIN number is?
