OK, jduffy, I'll bite for now. Remember, we can all play with numbers and skew it to best suit our agenda. After all, "statistics don't lie, but liars use statistics." Here's what I feel is a far "better" number based on a post I made back in September (there were 115 issues then):

Roughly 8000 vehicles have been sold - not all have made it into consumers hands, but we'll round up anyway (some were used in marketing, car mags, safety orgs, other testing, etc.).

Let's say 50% of the owners (4000) take time to read internet forums.
Of those 50%, only about half (2000) will post anything to the ft86club forum.

Therefore, one can't simply take 115 (ft86club owners) and divide it by 8000 for a percentage of 1.4%. That would assume every owner would read internet forums, would find the ft86club forum, and would be willing to post to it. Using a more realistic (IMO) sampling of 2000 owners, we would get a value of 5.7%.

In the end, the percentage of affected vehicles is likely somewhere between 1% and 6%...something no auto manufacturer would be proud of especially considering the severity and cost of the repairs per vehicle (pseudo-effective ECU flash aside).

6k vs 250k

All I'm saying is we are guessing. We simply don't know the real answer and Toyota/Subaru aren't going to be forthcoming with the real numbers.

How many people are members of this forum? How many of them own the cars? How many are from the US?

I think that it is possible that we have a large enough sample to perform a statistical analysis, but I am not sure, would need to know the answers to the above questions.

EXACTLY my point. We'd need answers to those questions in order to make any real conclusion....and even with those answers, it could end up skewed to an over abundance of problems b/c people may have joined this forum simply to find out what's wrong with their car.....BUT, it at least would be more valid than what we're doing now, which is just completely guessing.

I don't regret getting my BRZ for a second. Even though I have some rattles, the idle dip, etc., it's still a solid car.

What is the probability that any FR-S/BRZ owner will search the internet for information about their car and come across this forum? Now what is the probability after they get a CEL?

I'd guess the probability jumps by quite a bit.

Honest to GOD, on the Idle dip issue, I have filled with Shell gas only two times and both times, the idle dip almost disappears. Not saying gas quality is the ONLY factor for the idle dip, but I think its one of the variables.

Update Round 2: Dealership just called to update me on the car. With Toyota rep, they pulled apart and found the source of the low oil pressure was due to faulty timing chain tensioner. This part was removed/reinstalled at the other dealership as part of the VVTI gear replacements and wasn't installed correctly. Oil flows through this part, therfore causing a starvation condition. Bottom end of the engine ruined and will need to be replaced. Meaning, a new engine will be installed. Toyota wants it taken back to the original dealer and new dealer wants it's rental car back. New dealer was much more straight forward with me. Time to call Clayton again to get this Lemon Law process put into motion. Clayton said he would be sending me the paperwork.
