You're doing the right thing, your wife is lucky she has a husband who's so thoughtful.

One thing though, all you boys shouldn't be buying your gfs or wives corollas..
My bf is a smart cookie, buying me a miata to learn how to drive with ( I learned in one month.. basically 4 hours per week ).. I'm hooked! I had to drive a corolla recently and I felt so empty!! Until my life forces me to, I cannot drive an 'ordinary' car lol There are no arguments over vehicles in our relationship that's for sure.

Of course every scenario is different though. Since I just drive myself, miata was perfect. I really miss it ='(

Bought my wife a WRX 7 years ago, and we only just sold it this summer to get my BRZ... Even did beginner track days! She never got into the whole "driving is fun" thing. You're one of the rare few women who "get it", kudos to you.

I had to sell my toy car to buy a new house for my gf... She didn't ask me to do it but I got the BRZ and it is just as fun to drive with a bit less power and luxury but I cannot complain. I know how it is to sell something you enjoy for something you love. That being said an ultimatum is an instant relationship killer. I would have kept the car on principle if I was required to sell it. My gf now drives an A5 S-Line and I drive a BRZ so once she gets out of college I am going to try and convince her that I should get an R8 as a new toy.

Debt before toys - too bad you'll take a bit of a bath selling it. But debt free and being able to buy that sort of stuff when you want is a huge deal.

If my wife ever gave me an ultimatum like that (she wouldn't) I would do 2 things.

1) Be very, very annoyed and get rid of the car.
2) Nag her for the rest her damn life.

"You don't need Starbucks."

"You don't need that $80 purse. The 5 you have already is enough. If you really need another, we can get one at the thrift store for $2."

"No, you don't need to dine out for dinner. I can run to the store and get us a case of Kraft Dinner."

I'd make her damn life miserable. As it sounds, your wife is making yours miserable. I'm sad for you. I'm mostly sad that you're giving in to her demands though. I don't know the full story but either 1) she is being unreasonable and she is in the wrong, 2) you were unreasonable and got the car without her knowing despite not being able to afford it, or 3) circumstances have changed to the point where you can no longer afford it.

If it has anything to do with it being a manual and her being unable to drive it, suck it up and get the automatic. Or teach her how to drive a manual, or tell her to drive her own damn car.

Post still stands though. Guilt her into the ground. Not as payback but to get your debt paid back quicker. If she's a saver nevermind but if she's anything like my wife and spends $100 on Starbucks and $2-300 on dinners with friends every month then I'd be irate.

I would've pulled the "Good thing you didn't get your licence yet. I was going to get you a new car when you did." line?

I don't envy you my friend but good luck on paying back your debt quicker. Sorry that selling it is going to put you a bit further into debt for the first little while. :P

What I don't understand is why this conversation didn't happen before you signed the paperwork?

my gf thinks the car is too low but as long as I like it why would she care? ....
I gave her a buick and she loves it . to her a car is a car and is only transportation.
we do not have to agree to get a long. I'm a car nut she isn't. she argued for the frs vs the 911 due to the cost savings. I got the frs cuz its half the power of a 911 and a 1/4 the cost. however I love the car and exclusivity vs the 911. when I drive itit is pure joy.

My Wife knows better than to make me choose.

It's a selfish request on her part. Sorry for the loss man.

Poor guy will never get out of debt if part of the strategy is to buy a new car and sell it with the equivalent of 2-3 months use out of it. Probably lost at least $6K for the privilege. Could have bought a used GTR and sold it in a half year with 3 times the miles and done better financially.
