That is impressive for straight bolt on a VW these days. All that added HP and still not touching the internals of the 2.0 TSI.

So, VW will have the BlueMotion coupe possibly to compete with this too. Any real thoughts on how that car will play into Scion and Subaru sales?

Understandable. It's a decent comparison but taking into account that the FR-S is going to feature direct injection which boosts combustion efficiency by a ridiculous amount and affords a much higher combustion ratio, it'll be interesting to see how the FR-S turns out. I'm not a Honda guy but I believe that absent a conversion the S2K uses vtec instead of iVTEC; if the FR-S ends up coming with VVTLi then you're looking at a more aggresive torque curve given VVT's native cam phasing (what the S2K lacks) and VVTLi's added cam lifting (what the S2K already has, but only makes a difference at higher RPM's)

I'd understand wanting super lightweight if this will be your track-dedicated car but for most people who will drive it daily, like myself, I'd want the weight to be substantial *enough* such that I won't get torn to shreds in a high speed collision. I felt least secure on the freeways in my 2200 lb. MR2 Spyder, much less my Kawi Ninja.
Too light and I may install a supposed plug-and-play rollcage. Or is that overkill?

In this SUV hungry country I would say that would not be overkill. And as a fellow rider, I feel ya.

To put this into perspective a bit, The Nissan Silvia K's (s14 at least) made around 210hp and is said to weigh in around 2800lbs. My last SR20DET (from a Silvia of the S14 variety) swapped 1995 240SX (also S14) with myself (175lbs) and about 3/4 tank of gas weighed in at 2850lbs. The car was not as aerodynamic as the ft86, was not a front midship design like the ft86, probably didn't have as good of a weight balance, and was riding on 12 year old bushings. It would still get up and scoot, ran a 13.6, and handled pretty darn well once she got coilovers.
If the FT86/FR-S meets the realistic expectations that are being set for it, it should be very similar to my old 240, but with a more linear power curve thanks to being N/A, (not to mention making torque a bit lower in the rpm range). I fully expect the handling to exceed what the 240's, and possibly encroach on Miata territory. Combine all of those factors and the chance of it being a sub $25k car, and you have a winning combination. I don't plan on giving up my STi to buy this, nor my current 240sx project, but I may be forced to add another toy to the stable if Toyota and Subaru make good on it. |

I find it tiresome to drive a slow car period. In a torquey fast car it's much better for daily driving. Just the other day I was with a friend, her baby and some stuff in the trunk and my car felt so damn weak it wasn't funny. It felt stressed out!!! With me in the car by myself it's barely adequate and I only weigh 148 lbs. So I disagree on your logics in real world conditions.

DAMMIT! Just when I had decided I didn't feel like waiting anymore, and was about a month away from picking up a new Mustang... this happens. Looks like I'm back in the 86 camp... again.
