Technically it is illegal to mount off to the side.

Plus the cost of our device will be ~ $40-$50 compared with $100-$200 for the alternatives.

It's NOT illegal to mount it off to the side in the USA. Laws do vary from state to state but most of them pretty much just state it his to be X inches off the ground and not over Y inches high. Sometimes I don't even run with it on, most police don't care at all.

Also to keep the front of my car pretty I just had to ask the dealer not to drill the holes in the bumper for me.

^this. The laws definitely vary from state to state, and it used to be based off the old radar systems that needed a vertical, flat surface to bounce a signal off of, which is no longer the case, and no longer needed with the new Radar guns and LIDAR (laser).

I can say for certain, in Ohio, that front plates are required by law, but 99% of officers will ignore it unless you are being a complete douche, or they want an excuse to pull you over.

OH is the worst state in the US for traffic enforcement. The armed tax collectors roll deep in that state. I would have thought they'd be sticklers for the front plates.

In Cali they just can use it to pull you over for no other reason. I ran my GTI for 46K miles over 2 years and only got a front plate ticket once by a major ****! I just left it on after that. I live close to a area of extream wealth and many of the guys with supercars (Ferrari, Lambo, NOT 911, everyone has one of those) don't even run plates or even register the cars because paying a few no plate/reg tickets is WAY cheaper than actaully paying the thousands to register the car and get plates.

On my GTI I also ran it off to the side. Zip Tie style!

I was shocked at how many cars without plates of any kind there are rolling around CA. I even know some guys who get replacement dealer name plates every few months so it always looks like they just bought the car.

You wouldn't get 10 miles in MA without rear plates on the car.

Yup, some people roll around with the "dealer name plates" (I don't know what to call them, not real dealer tags) to fool the police, and it works 8/10 times.

I don't know what to call them either. Just usually a plate-sized piece of glossy cardboard with the dealer logo on it - if I'm remembering right (dealers don't use them out here).

Sorry I should have specified, I think it's illegal in australia to have them off to the side.

The laws here are pretty stupid.

I run a sticker for my front plate on my other cars, as long as you arent driving a Jap import the cops generally tend to leave you alone, even though sticker plates were never an option, most of them just ignore it.

The 86 I cant run a sticker though, because there are MASSIVE holes behind the plate mount that are cut out. I believe they are cut out of the bar from factory though, as the cuts are completely perfect rectangles. Can't be done at a dealer.

That's exactly what I'm getting done! It's back-ordered though, so I may have to risk a ticket for a few days...

In North America the bumper holes are done by the dealer because not all states require front plates. If all of Australia requires front plates I could see it being something dome at the factory for cars bound for down under.

They'd never let us have "WTF" on a plate here in America so I guess it all evens out...

My friend has the plate WTFHPND . I guess he got a relatively clueless clerk at the registry.
