Putting vacuum into the pan's drain will only pull air through the PCV system and definitely NOT the pickup.
If the pump is a blockage, like some of us think it might be, then neither will do anything. The only way the vacuum could be an advantage is if you removed the pan and put it into the pickup to get to the screen. This is not something that could be done with simple shop-vac attachments though. |

If it is like the FA20, it is on the passenger side of the block towards the bell housing. It is a bit hidden by the intake manifold.

The hose that goes to the top of the intake...
This shows with our AOS installed, but pinching that hose, or pulling and capping would do it. BUT... if the oil pump IS a blockage, putting vacuum on the drain will still do nothing. Even with the PCV closed off. |

If you pull vacuum on the crankcase, the PCV valve on the block will close. It's the other one that needs to be plugged or pinched closed.

wait are we seriously talking about using a shop vac on the drain hole to suck out possible excess sealant on a brand new engine that has warranty when the OEM hasn't made an official statement yet?
or are you joking about that... |

Having said that, I don't see an issue with doing this as i can't see why it will jeopardized the warranty. If it wasn't for keeping my warranty intact, i would have dropped my pan already.

Ideally one would vacuum out the drain hole while there was still some oil in it. Give the liquid a chance to pull any solids out with it. As Petah said the whole thing is more of a thought exercise or experiment more than a practical way to pull sealant out. Makes no difference to me since I have no stake in it anyway!

Had to delete, because it came to me that there is risk on it, as I said, variables. Isn't there a sort of pump that circulates oil, I think its used on automatic transmissions? Might be completely wrong because Im only a 5x100 dirty 1st gen.

If you blow or suck it out of the strainer into the pan, there's only a slightly smaller chance that it will get stuck in the pan drain hole.
Design an build a swarm of nano bots to scale the pickup tube (possibly a nano pyramid) and mine the silicon in the screen. Then belay it back down the tube and out the drain without damaging the supporting structure. Possibly hydraulic spiders. They've already got those. Simples.
