This has been on my mind, so I came back. Still cracks me up.

Can you assign him a percentage for cost reduction, or a simple target cost? Some sort of incentive, or training exercise? Either he has to learn, or you must establish boundaries in the division of labor between design, and engineering. Either way, if your seniors ever bring up manufacturing costs, you have ample evidence.

I can’t, he doesn’t work under me. He has this “I am engineering savant” attitude even though he is pretty much just a draftsman. He can’t wrap his head around simple concepts. He’s been doing it 30ish years and still can’t figure out material cost is a drop in the bucket compared to machine time and eliminating processes. He could make a simple bracket or a flat cover and then can’t figure out why adding hundreds of speed holes is a bad idea. Or if we are working on a new from scratch item try to lay things out in standard increments and not .12987” when .125” will do. Or that +.0000/-.0008 is not a reasonable machining tolerance unless you want to pay huge amounts of money to have the shaft ground to size. All I can do is submit a design change form to correct it and get it signed off to override him.

If I said that to him he would get super butt hurt and probably not speak to me for a week or two. He's actually on this forum but hasn't logged in for about 18 months.

That "spaceship" part is actually an attempt to combine a very simple drive, and very simple driven hub into one part. As you can see, not worth it. At least line up the drive hubs stylized openings with where the studs go in the driven hub so you can get a tool in there I should almost send the .step file to the machinist and see what he says.

He didn't have many posts and didn't really venture out of the NW regional section. He is on every forum he has a hobby for, or for every vehicle. Even vehicles he doesn't have.

Well I am on an Ascent forum (boring) and a model building forum (I am one of the nicer guys there) so I can't say anything.

He is on a couple forums at a time along with FB during work, then scoffs when asked to answer the phone or do anything else he deems out of scope of his job.

that seems easy to me. just let him do his thing, then make 2 parts. 1 his way, and 1 to the standardized methods. then deduct the increased cost from his salary to cover the additional processes required, and ask him if he'd like to continue manufacturing his version with a requisite salary reduction to cover the discrepancies.

alternatively, you can bet him beer money for it. you'd get a lifetime supply of beer!
