Our experience has been the opposite. We used Lowe's for a kitchen remodel and full window replacement. In both cases they were about 15 to 30% lower than anyone else (we got 4 to 5 estimates each time, including local contractors), and the work was perfect. So YMMV.

My contractors work for beer, pizza, and traded work. I have a lot of projects to do this summer. Good thing I have a shop now.
