You and most people.

All the solutions I mentioned are unlikely to lead to significant action or changes. Even with this pandemic, most people will say it wasn't that bad, and most people will just pass it off as a 'once in a century' occurrence that is unavoidable. Society will need to see an increase in the frequency of pandemics (this has already happened) that have personal ramifications for people to want to change. Even then, people would need to understand what is causing the increase in the frequency of these pandemics for them to understand what the solution is and that is unlikely. For instance, people find it hard to impossible to admit in the fact that emissions and CO2 levels are at an all time high, that those emissions are man made and that those emissions are causing climate change. It isn't impossible to change minds, but it can take decades to centuries to millenniums.

Besides this last year, we live in a fortunate time where we don't live in fear of pandemics like people in the past, so in many ways, we aren't mentally prepared to deal with pandemics. Because of vaccines, most pandemics are limited to variations in the flu. This pandemic was a wake up call for the world. My hope is that people will (at minimum) learn from this pandemic. While we may not be willing to make the steps needed to prevent the next pandemic, our response could be far better. We see the difference in countries that were mentally prepared and those that were not (S. Korea 38 deaths per million vs US 1,830 deaths per million).

Or we could conclude that we dodged a bullet this time and make some tough decisions to reduce the likelihood of a far more deadly outbreak in the future.

Ignoring, of course, that this bullet is still stacking bodies like cordwood. Just not American bodies.

Anybody want to estimate a non-zero probability of the first happening?

The government could put more money into prevention like species sampling, modeling, etc. We could spend money developing, and providing more, prophylactic vaccines. The government could stock up on more supplies. The government could invest in educating its population, in general, and specifically about vaccine efficacy.

Changing human behavior is going to take far more effort. Stop eating wild animals or raising livestock standards globally or eating less meat or whatever is going to be far, far harder. Some people have learned from this. Many people wouldn’t change their behavior no matter what.

The US is still stacking bodies. Our 7 day average is 534, which is 194k per year. We need to get deaths around 100 per day to equal the seasonal flu’s daily average, even though it is only seasonal, or we need to live with the numbers we have. Hopefully they will still trend down.

Epsilon? (I think there is supposed to be a consistent version of probability theory allowing infinitesimals, for the fellow math majors out there lol)

Humanity is pretty doomed IMO, I used to be enthusiastic about anti-aging treatment but now I feel like we're all gonna die within 30 years, maybe 50 at best. That's why I decided to buy my Aston Martin LOL.

The obsession with Tony Fauci is a little puzzling. The guy made some (not too many IMO) mistakes, but he did a decent job in a difficult situation working for the worst boss in history.

Hmmm...no politics here, eh? Or...just no politics that don't fit certain required accepted narratives, regardless of facts?

Man, does this get old.
