It's so annoying that I put my seatbelt on even before it comes on...

My friend's STi had a sequence of plug/unplug the seatbelt that would dissable the chime. This feature was nice for anybody who took out the factory belts and installed harnesses. Maybe the FR-S/BRZ has a similar way to beat the chime.

I was about to say what if your putting in a harness system instead of the standard over the shoulder system. Theirs a way to disable that chime guaranteed.

As for the question of low-speed fatalities, I suggest you look at statistics for motorcycle fatalities in states that don't require helmets... then consider that motorcycles don't even have an explosive device aimed at the rider's head (aka, an airbag, which is designed to be safe only in conjunction with a seatbelt). It doesn't take much speed to be lethal; if memory serves, Indian Larry was doing less than 30 MPH when he fell from his bike and died. Lest you dismiss motorcycle riding as being more dangerous somehow than car driving, NHTSA data states that the vast majority of fatal accidents occur under 50 MPH, and someone cited in a presentation Australian data that concluded that most fatalities occur under 50 KPH (which would be 30 MPH here in the states). Another source I couldn't verify, yet seemed legit, stated that researchers expect fatalities at 15 MPH, if the occupant isn't wearing a seatbelt. Now, maybe you live in Maybury, where everyone obeys the limits, and uses their turn signals every single time; but where I live, oh yeah... I've seen people doing over 40 across parking lots (usually while cutting across lanes to get to the other side faster). In their haste to get to an empty spot, I've seen people whip into my lane, on my side of the road. Residential streets around here are certainly no better. So yes, it is unsafe to be in a moving vehicle in a parking lot without your seatbelt on. As for how did this thread get so far off topic? Easy: we make fun of stupidity. You know how, every so often, you get the dumb kid on here (or other car forums) that wants to know which local roads people drift on, or thinks he's cool for posting video of himself street racing on a highway... and the whole community comes down on him like a ton of bricks for engaging in mind-numblingly stupid, dangerous behavior? Yeah... this is the same thing. Sure, we could stick to the topic the OP posted, and just be helpful. OR... we can hopefully shame him into being a smarter driver through peer pressure. At the very least, it teaches the little ones that this is NOT acceptable social behavior (something they may take as tacit approval by silence otherwise). That is all. |

Basically any thread that deviates from sainthood will generate flame, which is funny because when I am driving I see maybe 1% of drivers actually driving the speed limit or under. |

Dumb law, it should be an individual choice, but people have a hard time living with the consequences of their own decisions.
