I'm just surprised people find the chime annoying. It's more of a 'friendly reminder' chime than a 'danger' or 'caution' chime/beep.

I know its illegal but ill be sure and remember not to give a cop a ride in my car.
This method works on subarus that have the seatbelt beeping feature, its like a nintendo cheat mode,
Turn the ignition to ON. The engine should be off, Within 30 seconds, insert and eject the buckle all the way in and out 20 times, but do 30 to be sure. You can hold the release button down if you like, try it for fun and find out if it works

It would be annoying after minutes of it though.

I've driven my car around for a bit without the belt on (not on the street, I don't care what others do but I do wear the belt on the street, but not around paddocks, driving across airports for autocross sites, etc) and it seems like it stops beeping after 2-3 minutes anyways. Maybe I haven't driven it long enough past that point for it to come back on though.

Usually unplugging the previously mentioned plug under the seat will disable it, but on these new intelligent airbag cars I don't know..

It really goes beyond that (although I agree with you).

You get into an accident and go through your windshield but you don't die. You're rushed into surgery and get some crazy stuff done which costs tons of money. Your insurance only covers say...35K of your 110K bill which saddles you with 75K of medical bills. You pay for a couple years but then realize that filing bankruptcy is easier than paying your bills. You in essence default on your debt.

Think the Hospital just sucks that up? Nope...that's a tax write off. Know who ends up paying for that? Taxpayers.

Safety in cars and on bikes isn't because the government is too touchy feely...it's because tax payers were tired of bailing out people who couldn't pay their bills (not that I blame them directly).

Wear your seatbelt, don't get mangled in an accident, then I won't have to pay your hospital bill.

Unplugging the seat harness will likely cause an issue with the airbag, because, as mentioned, the "intelligent" system is calculating that you are wearing your seatbelt when the airbag deploys--if not, you will probably hit the airbag sooner in a violent collision, doing some of the aforementioned damage.

OP: In my own opinion (naturally I will respect yours, even if I strongly disagree with it) I prefer to buckle up because it becomes habit, and in an emergency when its necessary, you aren't going to think to put the seatbelt on. But, good luck.

At what speed do these occur?

You can't predict that. You could be doing 5mph and some jackass could come whipping in at 40mph and nail you. It's not how fast YOU are driving, or what you think will happen...it's just being prepared for all eventualities no matter how remote.

Anyway, whatever, I couldn't care less if people don't wear their seatbelts, I was merely pointing out the contradiction in that guys decision making process.

Oh I wasn't being sarcastic or anything like that. I was just curious to know if there was an average impact speed since you brought up statistics.

I know what you mean about the 40mph jackass though. I've been paranoid about being a passenger since I lost my best friend due to a drunk driver right before Christmas. I was riding with a college friend, four of us in the car, and he decides to try and drift... his front wheel wrx. Before I could tell him to quit, we went straight into a small tree in a crowded walmart parking lot at 9pm. Everyone was alright, but never again. That only raised my paranoia.

If this is a REAL statistic, I'd like to see it published in official government documents. Moreso, I'd also like to see the percentage of said collisions that resulted in an in-car occupant receiving serious injuries or death from not wearing a seatbelt, or where a seatbelt had likely prevented such injuries. Again, this is in parking lots and other low speed areas, NOT open roads. Pedestrian or cyclists injuries do not count. I don't ever recall seeing anyone, EVER, whip through a typical parking lot at 40mph unless it was completely empty and someone was hooning around. I might buy this if "most accidents" includes bumper scrapes and fender benders, or any time an insurance claim had been placed, but these aren't valid for "a seatbelt saved my life in the parking lot" argument.

Out on the road I'm buckled up 100% of the time. I also encourage others to buckle up, but respect their choice not to do the same.

How did this thread turn from "how do I disable the annoying seatbelt chime" into "you dumbass, I hope you enjoy getting yourself killed".....?

While I always wear my seatbelt out of habit (my dad ingrained into me as a child), I think it's everyone's choice. We're all adults here and if you want to choose to not wear one, that's your decision. Just like not wearing a helmet on a bike, that's your choice. You know how physics work and if you hit your head or fly through the windshield, well.. no surprise. I'm not being condescending about it, I think nothing less of anyone who refuses to wear one -- you know the deal.

I can understand that some people don't want a nagging reminder if they aren't wearing one (for whatever reason). I want to say the seat belt reminder is customizable by Toyota's TechStream at the dealer but I am not sure (DRLs are).

I'm sorry.... but if someone is complaining about the "beeping" from the seat belt, and how annoying it is, lol... than mission accomplished. Pretty sure the intent was for it to get repetitive so that you do buckle up!
