Go to Michaels craft store. They have thin foam sheets for $.85, cut to fit and mount on back of license plate, and problem solved.

Yes, but wouldn't you rather the dirt be between tape and license plate, rather than tape and car paint?

Sorry - misread your post. Dirt will get between the two, unless that business is clamped or bolted down. So that being the case, you want that space to involve something other than your paint.

The adhesive will capture the dirt and hold it in suspension rather than buff your car with it. As with all things body related, give it a visual inspection from time to time checking to see if the edges are lifting from the tape (time and elements will cause the bond to break down). If it is, it's a quick shot of goo gone, and you lay a new pad down. It takes a minute a year to protect your car.

3m tape is the way to go, it will not hurt the paint. It is the same things toyota uses to attach its lip kits and emblems. They sell it at autozone.

This is what I am going to use when my plates come in. (Frost King E/O 5/16" x 1/4" x 17 ft EPDM Rubber Foam). EPDM rubber for long life, "D" profile for for flex, and strong adhesive backing. going to cut a few strips and attach them to either the plates or the car (haven't decided yet). Great thing about this product, you can get them at any home improvement sotres, and you get a lot for the price!

Here's the P/N: SOA342L105. Slimline powdercoated black plate frame; includes hardware hider caps and spacers/standoffs. You can purchase it at many retailers/vendors.

I assume this is true for the FR-S guys, but my BRZ came with 2 black foam pads taped to the trunk below the 2 plate mount holes. Nice, but not think enough to ensure no plate-on-trunk contact, so I just added another layer of foam tape to those. The other thing I like to do is seal my plate with contact paper (available at most any craft or office supply store). Tones down the plate shininess a bit, which I like, and helps keep the plate looking new and not rusting/weathering over time.

I put these on the back of my plate, no rattles or issues so far.

I taped a wad of duct tape to the bottom of my license plate and have a couple of rubber washers under the bolts.

You can also use the felt side of velcro on the bottom of the license plate, cuts down on the rubbing and rattling.

I just put my plates on top of the paper dealer plate. Don't know if it helps, but it beats metal against the paint.
