Can you elaborate a bit? Is this a normal occurrence, yet something I should probably fix if I want my engine to last? Or normal as in normal engine operation that will not hurt the engine long term?

It’s probably just the AC clutch kicking in. I asked the same question to Delicious Tuning way back when I first tuned my car and became hyper aware of every little noise. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

It is normal. It is not a throttle body, injector, coilpack, or any other mechanical issue but a simple function of the systems.
This is common to many small displacement engines but is a bit more noticeable with these due to the boxer nature.
What you are seeing is the HVAC compressor kicking in and out. If you have the dials set to any windshield setting the system is kicking in no matter if on heat or cold to dry the air blowing against the glass. Next time it is doing it just turn the HVAC right off and it will stop. Turn it back on and it will return.
