The "one that got away" for me from this era is the Nissan Mid4. I wanted one of those so bad I could taste it. I completely swore off Nissan when they decided to not produce it.

Something like this might be in my near future (I'd give up my 86):

Back in 1957, this was the car I lusted after. Yep, it could dust off any production Ford or Chevy and even gave the mighty Chrysler 300B a run for it's money. Anyone remember this forerunner to the pony cars?

I got to drive a 73 for a week when I was in Germany. It was a blast but at around 100hp makes the FRS look like a rocket!

I was always interested in the 1st gen Impulse, as it was just rear wheel drive, though still with 140bhp turbo-4, Lotus-tuned suspension, and Giugiaro styling. It reminded me of what a RWD VW Scirocco might have been...

I was about 12 when I first saw the one I discussed, and was completely enamored with the manual flip-over headlights. Every time I went the garage I would have to sit in it an flip them over a couple of times.

Funny you mention that. There's a roller a couple of miles from me listed on Facebook Marketplace for $1300 that had caught my attention. No engine or transmission. It would make a fantastic start for a modern drive train swap.

That reminds me of something I forgot from my earlier list. One car that has been mostly forgotten was the Jeep Wagoneer's odd Studebaker cousin, the Wagonaire. Both station wagons were designed by Brooks Stevens. ![]() In 2004 GM marketed the Envoy as having the "first ever sliding roof!" They were wrong. Studebaker did it in 1963. ![]() I've had a couple of chances now to buy one of these, but they both came at inopportune times when I needed my money elsewhere. One day, maybe. |
