On the bright side, I can tell you that the FR-S/BRZ is not the only car with rattles. This is a current Camry with only 4,000 miles and it has some true doozies in it. My FR-S has been in the shop for a few hours now. No word, yet. |

finally get a little low down on whats going on. he said they got the horn and lock/alarm settings but was working on the DRL's. i know whats next on that... they wills ay thye need to order the ecu and yada yada. My tint is being redone tomorrow. i was told the tech could not reproduce the rattle sound coming from the stick shift area. prolly wasnt getting on it? i dont know wtf with that one. last the topic at hand.
I was told that the tech heard the tapping noise and recognized it as a problem. he said they were not sure how to fix it but that they would get a district guy down there if needed. I mentioned the #TAS number so i think tahts helping... i also told him about a dealer up in Washington fixing so if needed they can look into them maybe? anyhow thats my story so far. nothing to outrageous. i just hate being left in the dark. all it would have took was a phone call letting me know whats up and i would be one cool cat. fixed my rear popping rattling noise, by making sure the folding back seat is securely locked in place.

I did notice that the noise was much more common, and louder after putting the seats down to haul some large items, even though I put them back it hasn't gone away. I'll check to see if they aren't locked in properly.

day 2 update. car is still at the dealer. They got my tint fixed. as i guessed they need to order the ecu and tell me that it is on backorder. They are now trying to figure out the rattle at 4k (at least its acknowledged) and all they are telling me is that they are calling toyota guys tomorrow about the rear tapping. I was told i should expect to get the car back tomorrow afternoon unless there is a saftey call that wont allow them to release it.
i also hit em up on the phone about drilling holes in my bumper and the guy said i have to hit up the sales people... WTF? he tried telling me that some report says that is where to mount the bumper... i said yea but you dont have to drill holes in my bumper.... i find it ludicrous and that other dealers in California are NOT doing it. I dont know i am gonna put a bracket on there go in and show them how lame it is they did that. i highly doubt it but maybe i can get a bumper fix out of it. |

Fixed!
My BRZ recently developed this tapping/popping noise issue. Seeing that the member Coultergeist got his vehicle successfully fixed and provided some reference information, I took my car in and mentioned how his dealer approached the issue. As far as my dealership research went, they did not find any TSB or previous corporate communication on this issue for the BRZ. Perhaps there was on the Toyota side, but the information was not apparent to the Subaru network. Initially the technician couldn't replicate the noise, as it is fairly intermittent. So I rode with him for about 15 minutes to point it out. Folding the seats down helped identify the noise, and it eventually reappeared and he heard it clearly.
He took the all encompassing approach, by feeling and observing which panels/welds at the rear deck and at seat back seemed weak. Then he went ahead and center-punched them, similar to what Coultergeist's technician described in his fix and may be more. You can see the pix attached, where there are punch marks above the seat line and underneath the rear deck. He also insulated some hollow areas beneath the deck by inserting dense foam pieces. Happy to report, the noise is gone. I've driven about 30 miles since the fix, over rough roads and everything, no noise. It is also worth mentioning that the technician did not have to disassemble anything, for those who might be concerned with introducing more potential rattles. Thanks! Any picture of where the guy stuffed the foam at? Also, besides the picture you provided by the seat line, any other places he center punched it? Or did he just center tap all welds he could find?

Well, scheduled an appointment with the dealer tomorrow. I'll let you guys know the result when its done. I got lazy and scheduled it with the morristown dealer even thou I had issues there, but I will make it 100% clear do NOT drive my car without me there.

I get it in mine, only noticeable with the seatback down though. Not really annoying enough for me to let the dealership start taking shit apart, but I'll get around to fixing it myself sooner or later.

Hi all,
I got my car back yesterday and the news is predictably not good, though after seeing Dooq's post above, I may be trying yet again with the dealer. Here's what they found: Issue #1: Daytime Running Light delete I dropped the car off on Tuesday morning. Late Tuesday afternoon, the rep calls me and tells me that the ECU actually did not arrive. Naturally, this pissed me off since they called me last Thursday to make the appointment because it did arrive. Apparently, the ECUs are on "national backorder" and it will take several weeks for one to arrive. The rep who called me last Thursday had made a mistake - the dealer's computer told them the part had arrived when it hadn't. What happened to the days of actually looking for a part instead of assuming the computer was correct? Am I really that old? Issue #2: Rear deck tapping noise The tech verified that there was a noise in the rear deck, opened a case with Toyota, and found no repair at this time. I will be speaking with my Scion representative later today and will be going into great detail about how there needs to be a fix (like Dooq's, probably). I'm getting a little irritated at how many dealers are just shrugging and throwing up their hands with these new cars . Isn't part of their job supposed to be to develop a fix, not just wait for one to be developed for them? I ran a computer repair company for five years, and I'm pretty sure my clients would have thrown a fit if I just said, "Microsoft/Apple haven't released an official fix for your problem," billed them, and left. Issue #3: Turn on locator feature and fuel economy shift feature On a small bright note, the dealer was able to turn on two features that were described in the FR-S manual but didn't come defaulted on: (1) the locator feature allows the user to click the lock button on the keyfob three times and the car honks its horn a few times and flashes its lights (as opposed to the gentle tones the car emits if you hit the lock button once or twice) and (2) the economy shift features shows you which gear you're in and tells you (with a small flashing triangle) when to shift up to achieve best fuel economy. I didn't truly care about either of those two features, but I'm one of those guys who reads his car's manual cover-to-cover, and gets annoyed if there's a feature described in the manual that doesn't actually function in the car. Issue #4: A/C chirp Still no update or fix on the air conditioning chirp. I will be speaking with my Scion rep about this later today, too. Issue #5: Idle chirp Still no update or fix on this one, either. I was walking in downtown Portland yesterday evening, and happened to walk by a Hot Lava FR-S which had this chirp as it pulled out of its parking space - wow, that chirp is REALLY noticeable and makes the car sound like an old beater. Not okay. Next steps... So, for the moment, I'll be speaking with my Scion rep today, and then I'll have the dealer take another whack at the Triumvirate of Terror (rear tapping, A/C chirp, idle chirp) when I bring it back in to have my new ECU installed (if they ever get a new ECU, that is). Thanks, all! |
