Not unless the guy that cares is also a properly trained and experienced tech. Then that caring one remembers the work done by those around him. He is also big enough to admit to himself that, in some cases, even he glossed over some stuff because it was late in the day and he still had three more jobs to do because an earlier one took way longer than expected.

I would gladly pay the experienced tech double time to allow me to assist and collaborate. I'm also confident that if I got a halfway decent tech that cared, we would become fast friends. Might even get a call back from time to time.

Yes, I'm that good.

Is it "some cases" or "invariably"? Two radically different things.
There are guys just out of school that could work circles around you or I. The last thing they need is somebody looking over their shoulder and " assisting" or "collaborating". How about a send somebody that has messed around with a few things at home to come and assist and collaborate in your job that you do every day? Would they help at all?
It is a carguy myth that every tech that doesn't work in his own shop is pressured to cut corners and screw ups are unavoidable and acceptable to the dealerships. In real life even the best tech will be kicked to the curb if they screw up too often no matter what their motivation was.

Glad you caught that. I meant specifically that all professionals occasionally cut corners. Some professionals always cut certain corners by practice.

Part of the 80/20

I collaborate with professionals all day long, interns and lifers alike. When I did in-home service, I always invited the customer to observe and discuss. It was up to the customer to decide how involved he or she became in the process.

Any updates? The VIN tools still don't work for my VIN.

What the hell is going on with this recall?

Contact your dealer. The letters and actual work are months away yet.

Yeah it seems that the electric steering should take care of the car even with the engine off. I'm going to test that later in an empty parking lot to confirm.

Ah, OK, I was hoping I could find out myself online somehow.

I've been to them for TSB's and one time they couldn't find a specific one I wanted fix. I had to find it for them and print it out lol.

Thanks for the reply.

Ya it is weird how some get errors. The NHSTA site should give a yes or no answer to any VIN entered. Hell even my Canadian VIN worked on it.

Oh, incriminati, I suggest you relax, this is not a life or death recall.

As they say in the song " don't let the sounds of your own valve springs drive you crazy" (or something like that).

Brings to mind of a back-in-the-day recall on my 1970 MGB-GT. I had just bought that puppy brand new and spent a few hours racing up and down the twisty road to Mt Hamilton, in Santa Clara County, CA, on a Saturday.

I came home and opened up my mail and there was an URGENT recall notice for my car. The steering column lock on some MG's, was locking on hard right hand turns -

Shit! My heart sank! So, I made an appointment at the dealership for that next week then slowly drove my MG to the dealership, making only left hand turns.

THE END

I'm jealous. I've wanted a B-GT since about 1971. My moms best friend had one and took me and her son (who was the same age as me, 5 at the time) to the zoo and I got to ride in the back. I fit just right and was able to see out the rear window by looking up which I thought was really cool and the car just sounded soooo good and felt so much better than anything anyone in my family owned. That ride set me on the path to digging small fastback coupes that I've never left. I almost got one instead of my BRZ but it couldn't be an everyday car being ~45 years old at this point and my Crosstrek bored me to tears so I got the modern underpowered , great sounding, lightweight, fun, safe and RELIABLE alternative. I still want a B-GT and will have one someday, I'd sure love to find that ultra rare one from 1975(?) with the 215 V8 and 5 speed.

I called the Toyota recall hotline two weeks ago and confirmed that my VIN was on the list of affected units. The rep said that recall notices should be out sometime in December but they are still working on a remedy for the problem, which must be figured out before they can begin repairs. In the meantime, once I receive the notice, I'll drop my car off at the dealer and see if they'll give me a Corolla hatchback loaner.
