Close to 140mph in my '64 jag E type. That was at the red line. US cars had 3.54 butt gears so the car was rev limited. I understand European cars had 3.31 final drives and could get to 150ish top speeds, but US cars had better acceleration. That car had no sound deadening, and poor door seals, plus the 3.8 ltr strait 6 was cranking just to the right of your legs, so the sound at high speeds was fantastic. You KNEW you were going fast because you could feel and hear everything about the car and road all around you. You couldn’t help but visualize all those bits and pieces spinning and flying around right next you you. Very exhilarating!

Got my Triumph TR6 up to 110mph once, but it was a real hand full. It was a struggle to herd it down just one lane, so didn’t keep it there very long. That car was a blast to drive on slower crooked roads, but just wasn’t built to handle high speeds like the jag.

The FRS seems to handle much more like the Jag than the TR6. It’s so nimble, yet precise. At speed it just feels so rock solid. At times, I do miss the all the noise and sensory input that those old British cars conveyed, but for typical cruising around, this car is so much more comfortable and livable that I wouldn’t go back (well, maybe just once in a while).

After being without a sports car for 20 years while raising a family, it is a real treat to get to drive a FUN car again.
