That's just a hydraulic transmission. You can build a hydraulic planetary transmission and still have it connected to the engine with a manual clutch, a la Pontiac's Powershift 4 speed hydraulic transmission used in Superstock racing back in the early 60s.

Let’s break this down a little. What is the definition of “automatic”?

“working by itself with little or no direct human control.”

Seems clear to me.

I'm not saying anything against autos here, otherwise this degrades to yet another auto vs manual discussion. I don't care which is faster, which is technically better or which is more fun. But a car that shifts automatically is an automatic pretty much by definition. I don't care about the voodoo behind the button and yes some autos are better than others. Is a DCT better than a slushbox? You betcha. Is it still an automatic? Yup. This is based on what you, the human driver do, not the tech.

That's all I'm saying.

My personal preference is a manual gearbox. 3 pedals and a stick. That's me, that's what I like it's more fun to drive and a little more of a challenge and there's stupidity you can do with a manual you can't with an auto. What you choose is up to you. But that's a manual- because you have to actuate the clutch manually and manually select the next gear.

Does that make sense? It's not the technical definition, it's the human definition.

Got it, you and I are talking about two different things then when it comes to the "automatic" part.

Carry on.
