I have a 2017 86 and have a couple of question about the so called 'Crickets'.
  1. Just how loud are these crickets? from the comments I have read it seems to be pretty loud and persistent.
  2. Do you only hear them on idle?
  3. Is it possible I have them but I can't hear them because of my old man ears?
  4. Does anyone have a sound sample of the cricket chirping? who knows might make good elevator music.

Just curios.....

They range in volume from the level of noise you hear in a cheap hotel, frequented by hookers, with squeaky bed springs, two rooms away, to a cheap hotel with squeaky springs, frequented by hookers, in your own bed. It is also hard to judge by peoples comments since a lot of it is perception and tolerance. What one person thinks is horrid another doesn't even notice.

You should only hear them at idle. They are especially noticeable when idling in a drive through.

If you have them you should be able to hear them even with old man ears. They usually show up in warm temperatures and using fuel with an undetermined level of ethanol. No firm facts but the most accepted theory is that the ethanol causes cavitation at higher temperatures. This makes sense why the shorter stroke on the new fuel pump helps prevent them.

I have a 2013 FRS that I've put 116,000 miles on and I have never heard a cricket. I always buy whatever gas is the cheapest 93 octane. It used to be Sunoco but lately Cumberland Farms is cheapest. I also use E85 from time to time. (Whenever it's cheap).
And to this day I've never heard anything that even resembles and cricket. I don't know if I'm lucky or just plain deaf.

This bold text above raises a couple of questions:
  1. Does your wife know what this sounds like?
  2. Does your wife know that you know what this sounds like?

Great! Was going to head over to Subaru today and needed a better way to describe the sound

Today the weather was quite warm and I had some pretty intense crickets. It was not the first time, but today the noise was much stronger and very noticeable at idle even with closed windows. At first I thought that something was wrong with the car, but when I revved up the engine they disappeared. I tried after a couple of hours with the engine cold and the noise was back to normal.

Started my car on Friday morning and was letting it come down from high idle when I started hearing the worst chirping ever. It seemed odd since I have not heard a thing from the crickets in a year. It was very loud but sort of random and only happened in sets of three. Listened to it for about a minute and decided to check things out so shut the car off to see if it came back under a warm start. As soon as the car was off I heard CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP.
Apparently the female frog that lives in the pond on the other side of my fence at the end of the driveway had attracted a boyfriend and he was singing his song of love.
Was very relieved.

Tinnitus (TIN-ih-tus) is the perception of noise or ringing in the ears. A common problem, tinnitus affects about 1 in 5 people. Tinnitus isn't a condition itself — it's a symptom of an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss,
