It is an officer thing.

Between 1976 and 1982 I was an army Mobile Support Equipment Operator (truck driver) and qualified on any vehicle they would let me behind the wheel of. There were very few vehicles I didn't have checked off. The stuff I operated on a day to day basis ranged from forklifts to heavy recovery wreckers (even had a tracked cert for the 113). By the time I was out I was an instructor for many of the classes.

In 1990, at 31 years old, I took my commission in the navy reserve and went to the local army militia unit to get my military permit. The 18 year old militia private that tested me for my permit was generous enough to sign off on vehicles up to commercial pattern vans. I was pissed and said so. The private's response was "Well Sir, if officers can drive everything they don't need the rest of us."
They were wise words.

I'm planning on getting a new intake soon so one way or another it's gonna fix something,
