I get 23-24 mpg until the light comes on. How the heck did these people get 31?

It's because of one of the following reasons:

1. You are lead footed. (Most likely)
2. The engine has some issue causing low MPG. (Less likely).
3. Combination of 1 and 2 above.

Because you drive through Toronto. My commutes are straight up and down the empty 401 to Windsor and my milage had been a solid 32 for 3 years.

Why did you buy a RWD car in the first place? It's useless in traffic compared to FWD. RWD is less efficient, and can't hold a candle to FWD when it comes to bad weather conditions.
But where does torque play a role in this ^^^^ statement?

To the above, I said traffic. That means bumper to bumper, barely moving, or moving at the proper speed limit to avoid accidents. I don't think I need torque in traffic, certain situations (like someone coming at you while making a left turn, but that is loosely tied to traffic and more poor judgement), yes, daily driven traffic, no.

Also I don't think any car really has a problem getting up to 60 mph/100 kmh for highway driving with a low amount of torque within the time of an on-ramp (some on-ramp lengths vary obviously), it's not a necessity to have large amounts of torque just because you can't merge onto a freeway properly, maybe try merging at 55/90 and not 40/70?

There is a lot of know-it-alls here from what I can tell, and a lot of people that use periods in their sentences. The lacking power and torque thing directed at this car always gets me though, if you're driving how you should be, you don't need anymore than what it's giving.

I never said torque had to anything to do with that statement. I think this is where you started to get confused..

You don't really need anything more for traffic than 4 wheels, a safe chassis, and some creature comforts. If everyone just drove what they needed in traffic then we would all be driving a Prius.

Do you consider daily driving and traffic to be the same thing? If so, you have a really strange definition of daily driving.

And the debate cycle tries to continue. I edited because I actually just hate the debate at this point. Driving how you're supposed to, lol. What do you measure how you're supposed to drive by?

The car could benefit from added performance, that is easy to see. For a lot of people. For some the car is fine. WGAF at this point.... just sick of seeing people arguing about it or being criticized for their opinion of it.

Edit: bruh, totally sniped.

Hmmm, my daily drive consist of sitting in / hitting traffic at least 2 x a day. Never really thought people separated the two ideas since I'd venture to say a lot of people have a commute and deal with traffic daily.

To your first point, I was only talking about torque, so driven wheels had no place as a response. Perhaps why you thought I was confused. Secondly to your last point, maybe I am closed minded on the definition of daily driving, because I look at it as point a to b driving, so going to work and back, or grocery and back.

Speed limit? No aggressive driving? Anything that doesn't have the possibility of getting you a ticket I would say.

The car could benefit, when spirited driving is taking place

Torque. Would it be nice to have a big load of low down torque and not have to worry about what gear I'm in when traffic starts oozing at 0-20mph.

If it didn't have a compromise that would affect how the car behaves when it's singing at 5-7k.

That's unlikely and I only want to own one car. If I owned two cars, one to commute in and one for the weekend... I might end up with a diesel golf and a Caterham 7.
