You have to take it into historical context, you also have to consider local jurisdiction taxes, fees, cost of vehicle ownership, and their income.

It's how Purchasing Power Parity works.

It's also why threads like this need location for context, otherwise it's just a bunch of big numbers thrown around with zero real-world relevance.

I put $43k before I checked the exchange rate.

List was £28500 (Sterling), today that is $38100 (US). However I got about £2300 discount and added £400 for extras. Then you would need to add the "cost of credit" which is about £2500.

You should see what we pay for houses over here. A sensible 3 bedroom semi in an average priced area is £150,000 ($204,000). However we get hurricane force wind (gusts) at least once a year and it's nice lying in bed listening to the roof creak and groan knowing you are in a steal, brick, concrete and block building that weighs several hundred tons and isn't going anywhere. Only internal non-load bearing walls are made of 2x4 and dry wall.

We thankfully still have much stricter employment laws here. You can't simply be fired because your boss doesn't like you. There have to be grievance processes, warning stages, justified reasons and if you feel unfairly dismissed you can take your employer to a tribunal for "unfair dismissal" and get compensation. This all ties together to mean banks are willing to lend us more money for houses, cars etc. as we have better job security.
