55 Chev 4 door hard top (no posts or support between the doors) that sat in a field for many years before I got it for $100.

Many hours spent on engine and transmission. Not one minute spent looking under the car at the frame.

Drove it for several months with no drivers license, no registration, no insurance and plates off a 64 T Bird.

The incident description is pretty much as you said (sans the Music. It would more likely a Deep Purple or Uriah Heep 8 track)
Now, @Tcoat ...... I cannot find a reference to or a picture of, a "1955 Chevrolet 4 door hardtop".

Were they made just for Canada ...... ??

People look to the past through rose colored glasses.
I am so with you on this.

I sold my 1970 Willey Kaiser Jeep Gladiator a few months back. When it was for sale, a guy I know with a 15 year old son said he would buy it and fix it up for his son to drive. I told him he was high as a kite, old cars suck, and to get his son a used civic. I wouldn't sell to him.

And let's not even start on the lack of safety. Back the you just hosed the brains off the dash and sold it to the next guy.

Don't think they were just Canadian but they were rare. I wish I knew just how rare back then. It was just another cheap field car to me when I bought it.

First picture when I searched

And a 56

doors open

and 57

Edit: OK so maybe it was a Canadian thing! Mine was certainly a 55 with square wheel wells and 55 210 trim.
But this tells us it came in 56. Someplace I should have a picture of the damn thing.

Yep, I do believe that the car in your first picture is a converted car.

Could be, back in late 1955, GM just cut out the center pillar, put bigger side windows in it and palmed it off to you Canadians as a 1956 .......

Side note ...... from the ad in your post ....... so, we had "sport sedans" in 1956 ......

I'm noticing a trend, there are two popular threads over the last few days/week both with the same OP that both go way off topic, and are absolutely worthy...

No, we have thread drift everywhere. We don't discriminate.

But, I never claimed old cars were better, just that they could be fixed easily. I actually said I drove junk.

You live in Florida where cars can last forever. When we are talking "old" junkers we drove in the 70s and 80s the car may have only been 5 or 6 years old. They take far more abuse in the Canadian climate.
His whole point was that we were indeed able to make those repairs on the side of the road back then.
Yes the modern cars last far far longer now but if I blow a water pump there is not a hope in hell of changing it on the side of the road. I am also not picking up a beater for $75 and driving it for a year with a total repair and maintenance budget of $50. Some of us actually had to do that back in the day.

Yep, the days when the local junk yard was the main auto supply place and retread tires were just fine ....... since you weren't going to go over 60 mph anyway ......
