2 gallons of prestone and water mixed
Can of either quick start
Dozen or so assorted fuses (the little round glass ones)
Assorted 12 volt twist in bulbs
Spare set of wiper blades (the vacuum powered wipers tended to fling them into space)
Brake fluid
WD40 (gallons of the stuff to dry the plug wires when it rained)
Spark plugs (in case the WD 40 wasn't enough)
A spare manual choke cable (They had to bend in a weird direction and broke often)
At least 3 quarts of oil
Tow rope

And... At one point a spare clutch which I ended up installing in a field on the side of the highway since I sucked at guessing how long the old one would last when it started to chatter.
Sounds very familiar! I never left home without at least 2 of these.

That was my Dodge days.
Two of those, fan belt and a spare fuel pump were required at all times in the Coronet R/T.

Figured. Anybody that knew you had to carry those thing around drove a late sixties or early 70s Chrysler product of some sort. The worst thing about them was the total inability to figure out why they blew. It was just sort of random.

Yup, it was the first thing you looked for if the car randomly died or wouldn't turn over.

The Dart was a 72 with a nice shit brown paint applied by roller. It did the job!

It always makes me laugh when people say how much better cars used to be back in the olden days. I read a conversation like this one and this stuff wasn't uncommon because cars were very unreliable. Now no one carries a water pump or whatever- not only because of the complexity of the engine and not being able to just throw one in whenever easily- but new cars are just so reliable (Fiat-Chrysler cars the exception of course).

People look to the past through rose colored glasses.

All the years I drove junk around and never once had to call a tow truck

My top two most reliable cars were an Acadian and a Chevette. You couldn't kill those things! They also would barely do 60 mph

The only time I would have needed to call a tow truck was when my 55 Chev split in half after going over some railway tracks too fast. Since there was no way to trace it to me I just left it on the side of the road and walked way.

Well now, TCoat, do you want to tell us "the rest of the story" ......or shall I speculate ..... ??

OK then.

I was late on a Saturday night, TCoat had just finished watching a Dukes of Hazard TV show, when he decided to jump into his almost rusted in half, POS, 1955 Chevy, to take a spin.

As the Dukes of Hazard theme song was blaring out of his radio, he approached the railroad crossing at a high rate of speed ...... thinking ...... if they can do it, so can I.

After his airborne stunt, his rested hulk of a car came to rest on the other side of the tracks ...... in almost two pieces.

Since it was unregistered and unlicensed, he decided to just walk away from it.

However, when the local LEO arrived upon the remains of his car ...... they had a pretty good idea of who it belonged to ........ yep, the one and only .........Tcoat..........

Close, except:

Dukes of Hazzard wouldn't even exist for 5 more years.

55 Chev 4 door hard top (no posts or support between the doors) that sat in a field for many years before I got it for $100.

Many hours spent on engine and transmission. Not one minute spent looking under the car at the frame.

Drove it for several months with no drivers license, no registration, no insurance and plates off a 64 T Bird.

The incident description is pretty much as you said (sans the Music. It would more likely a Deep Purple or Uriah Heep 8 track)
