I am one of the class switchers. Been running in STS for the past 8 years and I find SSC extremely attractive.
Imo it's the greatest idea coming from the SCCA in years. The continuous arms race to better/lighter parts is very time consuming and expensive. I love the concept of a spec class were everyone is running on the same parts and tires. It greatly reduce costs and reduce purse advantage in the process (i.e. whoever can afford Penskes) |

I believe it's still in CS. Never saw anything about it being classed in BS.

^ the spec class is the test, the 86 is the guinea pig, some would have rather seen NB Miata's or E? Civics but there was 100+ 86's showing up to nationals, ~90k chassis on US roads and prices are dropping, manufacturer is still supplying parts as needed and you don't need a trailer for your race tires.
This isn't something they're doing to YOU, this is something they're trying to see if a spec class works for Solo. With all the bitching and moaning about classings and attempts to push classes to be more or less modified this could please a lot of people, autox is about the driving and the setup after all, being out-spent is no fun. I like the spec class and wish it happened a year earlier. A class where you don't have to worry about new cars being guinea pig'd into your competition and potentially making your car irrelevant is outstanding. It will hopefully have the classing stability that I've been looking for in SCCA at the cost level that I'm willing to play at.

Kyle, you don't need to participate in a class to have an opinion. Last I checked everyone was entitled to theirs. It would be like me writing in and voting for an issue on STX that financially affects the folks that do run in that class. A class I have no intention to run in. I hope you see my logic.
I agree, the SCCA should've just added another street class where the Twins could be competitive instead of this whole one off SSC thing. That way people who wanted more mods could move to STX instead of an in between class. Perhaps they could add a few more cars to the class too, like the NC Miata, the RX8 and we can have our old C street class back. The one that had great participation numbers. Course dependency at the last local event really killed it for me in DS. I ran a course that was basically tight turn arounds followed by full acceleration, brake for another turn around, full acceleration, rinse and repeat. Usually where I have been within tenths of the class leader (WRX) in DS, I was a full 2 secs behind that day with no way of catching up. Perhaps with better driving I could cut the gap to 1.5 sec. The finish was basically a tight 20mph turn around with a flatout acceleration zone where I hit over 73mph in 3rd going into the finish. My time that day would've been 2nd in CS behind the ND Miata of Bob Klingler. It's what got me thinking about switching to SSC. Add higher altitude to the mix, it was a recipe for disaster. Over 5000ft above sea level is at least 15% power loss for NA cars and less than 5% for turbo cars. The only thing that concerns me is the lack of competitors in SSC locally. |

Chill. STX could lose 20 drivers next year and still be considered a healthy class.
SSC will likely remain a supplemental class and that will keep out a lot of people. More power, more tire, and better suspension are still the primary reasons that STX folks will stay/go there rather than SSC. SSC is mostly going to be an outlet for folks who are some combination of: - aren't entirely sure they could win on any day in DS - want a more casual non-jacket-chasing experience - want an easy button for a guaranteed pointy end build - appreciate a competition that will truly be on driving talent alone, and not car prep as well If anything, the intense compression in the trophies (average 0.1 second gap between all 16 trophy winners) might scare off some people from joining STX. Compare 1.6s between first/last trophy spot in STX vs. 2.5s in STR. Apply 2.5s to STX and it goes all the way to 26th place. Who wants to compete in a class where merely bobbling the throttle once will drop you five spots? I know I'm questioning my sanity...and my course walking strategy, but that's another story. Bottom line though, STX will be just fine. And until it's not, I'll leave my pitchfork where it is - firmly planted in the dumbass who thought a 93 octane limit was a good idea. |

Hey guys just a heads up I talked with Doug Gill briefly about the spec class and he's asked that instead of sending letters to the SEB we E-mail/call him directly. The SEB is not handling the spec class right now and all decisions are going through Doug and others.
Here's his contact info that he gave me to share: Doug Gill SCCA Solo Competition Manager 1-800-770-2055 DGill@scca.com Any letters that you write to the SAC/SEB will be forwarded on to Doug but it expedites the process for everyone if you send your concerns and feedback there.
