Dump truck side swipped my poor BRZ (Video)

Hi All,

Just wanted to share what happened to me today.

Driving to work and a huge dump truck in the left lane decided to switch into my lane. He didn't see me as he tried to merge in my lane. There's always heavy trucks in this area and I was glad I got past them all in the first half of the video as it looked like I was getting trapped between a few of them.

There's rubber from his tires all over the side of the car and the door is caved in. Power window is messed up as well. Luckily I didn't get hurt but I was in shock for a long time after this and could barely get any work done that day. Also the car behind me stuck around to give me his name and number as he witnessed this whole disaster. So lucky as most people don't want to get involved in this etc.

I wonder how good paint technology is these days. Will the body shop be able to paint match my crystal white pearl close to factory? I don't want 1/2 my car to look a different colour. I know it can be tricky to paint a tri-coat paint job.

Anyone recommend a good body shop in the Vancouver, BC area?

Folks, this isn't going to buff out....

My poor '15 BRZ, I hope you get fixed soon!

I had to have the door and rear quarter painted after debris damage from a lorry. Same colour as yours and it matched perfectly.

oh man that sucks....... Sorry to see this and hear about it. I hope you get it fixed to look as good as it was before. To give you some hope, I had a bad one where someone rear ended me and it was fixed to where you would never know looking at it. And that was just at Caliber Collision.

Since you don't have to pay for it, definitely take it to dealer shop so you get OEM pieces. To many body shops using aftermarket pieces which can be questionable when it comes to rust protection and steel thickness.

I had a kid back into my car with her Jeep and the spare pushed the quarter panel in about 6". They cut out and replaced the whole panel and matched the paint perfectly. As said, take it to the dealer body shop so you know that they use the right panels and paint.

I tried to attach pics but I'm old and tech challenged...

Its amazing that you actually passed the trunk and you were in front of it yet he did not see you.

I have noticed that our cars seem to be invisible on the road. So many times other drivers have made moves as if I wasn't there. I guess because we are low to the ground? It drive my wife crazy especially when we drive long distance on the interstate.

Good luck with the repair! Hope she's up and running in no time!

Anybody that has driven truck will tell you there is a massive blind spot on the passenger side where even pickup trucks can disappear for a second no matter how many mirrors you have. You have to be very careful moving to the right in traffic. That s why you should not pass trucks on the right when on the highway (no matter how tempting it is).
Now in this case the truck driver most certainly should have known that the car was there since he overtook it the car didn't try to pass him. Once the truck had the car partially past his front bumper is when the height would have come in and it disappeared.
Truck driver was a dumbass and should never have been in the far left lane to start with (unless he turned into it in which case he should have watched closer)

California driver, the wife will no longer get into my car, she panics next to trucks. Then again she drives a massive SUV so I see her point.

Looks to me that the dump truck driver was being an asshole. He waited until he reached an area where the right two lanes were merging into each other and picked that spot to pull over. You don't do that unless you're trying to block people coming up on the right hoping to merge in at the last minute. Otherwise you wait until you're past the merge area to make sure you don't interfere with merging traffic. He didn't see you there because he was too busy looking back at the cars approaching from behind, the ones he was trying to box in.

People suck.

Here's the rearview camera video

Here's what the rear camera saw. You can tell he started to turn into my lane first then turn on his right turn signal on.

The rear camera could see his windshield perfectly so I'm not sure how he didn't see the rest of me. I have a feeling he was just looking at his mirrors on the side and didn't look ahead.

Good news is the guy behind me stopped to give me his contact info as a witness and my dashcam video saved so much headache.

If you don't have a dashcam, go get one! Insurance is going to cover everything but it looks like the other party is dragging it's feet.

You can see his windshield fine but he is sitting about 2 feet back from it. You would have been almost invisible from up there.
No excuse though since he should know he can't see that area and be aware of what he pulled up to. Like Extra said he was more focused on forcing his way in on the cars behind him then who was in front or beside him.
