Hmm, did you mount them to the plate or the trunk?

It seems the stock 2 black strips on the trunk are just foam pads with adhesive on the other side. I used to have a roll of this but ran out of it. I'll check a few local hardware stores today to see what they have.

I stuck mine on the back of the plate so the soft part was against the paint.

3M double sided tape on the back of the License plate works well too. Specially if you only want to use a 2 bolt plate frame.

I don't think you want that other sticky side to stick on the trunk paint though...

The 'glue' that I used was clear RTV. It works well and can be removed pretty easily if necessary.

I used something very similar. Instead of the felt stuff which can get wet and fall off, I used ther rubber stoppers instead.

It doesnt damage the paint at all. Its the same type of tape used to attach lips, side skirts, spoilers and emblems from the factory.

Have you noticed any dirt build up on the foam? If so, has it caused any damage to the trunk?

I've only had the car for a couple months or so and haven't seen any damage. I have used this method on other cars for years and never had any problems. YMMV.
