That's a Model A Ford. As a matter of fact, that was my first car (age 14) and my first floor shift.

And unlike modern manual trannies, that shifter actually sits right on top of the tranny, and is connected to the shift forks in the tranny.

Then I guess someone just made up the whole" don't rest your hand on the shifter" adage, thought it might have stemmed from something else.

Toshiya Joshima (Purple Shadow: S2000) from Initial D rested his hand in the shifter. This way, he was able to do the perfect drift. To be called "god's hand" and make perfect drifts, I must rest my hands in the shifter too right?!? LOL

Yepper that was a picture of a 1929 Model A Ford fer sure.

My first shifting experience (other than tractors) was in a Model A pickup truck.

Well, now that you mention it, back-in-the-day, when many of us kids had floor board shift cars and girls wore dresses, the front seats were bench type and not all that wide.

Also, the cars were drafty and the heater was on the inside of the firewall and the heat came out of the center. So, if your date wanted to be comfy, she would sit in the center close to you (no, we didn't have seat belts).

Since the driver had to shift, so we told the girls, that we couldn't keep our hand on the shift lever because it would wear out the transmission. They couldn't expect us guys to just hold our arm up in the air between shifts so, our arm and hand had to rest somewhere, to be ready to shift quickly....... .....get the picture.

Second to third was always the most fun shift ......

As manual trannies have become somewhat rare, and found almost exclusively on sport/performance cars, there have been a number of "adages" created and circulated on the internet.

Folks seem to forget that up until the 1950s, virtually all cars were manuals. There were no "special rules" about driving manual trannies until they became an "enthusiast thing".

OP, I love weighted knob for daily. Make shifting much nicer imo. Granted this in on a different car since my FRS is AT but same principals apply.

I decided to get the weighted shift knob. I'll be picking it up today! I'll post a pick when I get it.

If Humfrz got a YouTube channel, I think he'll be the same level as TJ Hunt, Evan Shanks, or Smurfinwrx. Lol #hinthinthumfrz

An afternoon nap JUST gets me to 10pm.

Oh, I have other things to do ..... transport grandchildren, go to the doctor, go to the pharmacy, grocery shop, cook supper ...... see, I have LOTS of things ...... ......that make me tired so that I need many naps.

I actually prefer using the stock knob now.
