It was totaled because that's not how insurance works. Cars are totaled based on their value and the cost of the repairs in a regular repair shop. It has nothing to do with whether the car is repairable or how easily it can be repaired. It's all about the numbers. This is so that the insurance company isn't paying more to repair the car than it's worth.

In a "total loss formula" state like Alabama (where your profile says you live), the car must be totaled if the repairs exceed a certain percentage of the car's market value. The TLF in Alabama is 75%. So let's say that car was worth $15K before the crash. If the repair estimate is $11,250 or more, the insurance company must write it off. They'll pay the owner the $15K (plus taxes) and sell it at auction. Depending on the insurer, they may total it even below the 75% threshold if it makes financial sense for them to do so.

Looking at that car, would the repairs have cost more than $11,250? Probably, after you figure retail prices for the parts and the cost of the labor to do the work. No doubt you're doing it for much, much less than that. Sometimes salvage title vehicles are a great deal just because of the cost of labor in a shop vs. no out of pocket cost for your time.

The labor is the biggest killer for the repair costs, salvage cars indeed are not for everybody but proper research and diligence it can be a great deal.

Yes sir. It was the closest parts car I could find and it was the same color. That and it had a complete front end minus headlights so it was to good to pass up. I figured I can swap the badge later.

Hey I'm glad they salvage cars like this because I get one hell of a deal. I should be a little under $6k after its finished and that's with the price of the car and all the repairs.

Looks like you should be a Subaru Dealer with all those subies. Sounds like a great project, probably what I should have done instead of getting new. My issue was I wanted a silver BRZ in auto and could not find used anywhere. For 6K keep it, use for years and still sell for what you got into it. I need to find a Cayman like this.

Well I finally found a BRZ limited right headlight and got it ordered and on the car along with new fender liners and bumper supports. I also just got the clock spring repaired from the airbag melting the wires when it deployed, the front seat belts repaired or rebuilt whatever you want to call it and the airbag module reset and installed in the car today. A company called "MyAirbag" did it all for $300. I took all that stuff out of the car and mailed it to them and they got it all fixed and sent back in less then a week. All the lights on the dash are now normal and everything works so now it's time to get it inspected and on the road.
