Thump sound after shifting.. Any ideas?
To begin with i have a manual trans frs with only 200miles but the problem was there since 0 miles.. i just did not pay much attention until now its kind of bugging and worrying me.. the problem is that its only noticeable on dead stop and when shifting to first gear.. I can hear and feel the THUMP or Pounding sound/feel at the rear of the car after letting go of the clutch pedal very slightly.. Has anybody here experience/hear/feel this sound? Is it normal? Is it because of hard bushings? or loose bushings? Whatever it is i just want to make sure this is normal... Thank you in advance!

It's normal, just the internals coming to a stop. Lots of threads on this. There's even a TSB from Toyota/Subaru stating it is normal.
If it bothers you, just wait a second or so before putting it into gear and it won't thump. |

well the car is already at stop? So the internals should have zero rotational to begin with.. but i guess if everybody is in the same boat.. looks like we got crickets and thumping associated with this car.. Thanks

Yeah this is definitely not an issue, actually its shows a good tranny and parts. I like the bump. But if you don't like it, just hold the clutch in for a few seconds before putting it into gear.

The thump you hear is the clutch friction disc coming to a sudden stop when you shift into first gear. If you shift into neutral when coming to a stop but before fully stopping, the friction disc will continue to spin for a few seconds before coming to a complete stop. If you shift into first while the friction disc is still spinning you get the thump of the disc coming to a stop whereas if you wait until you come to a complete stop before shifting into neutral you will not get the thump. You will also get the thump if you're sitting in neutral at a stoplight with your foot off the clutch, then when the light turns green you quickly put your foot on the clutch and shift to first, you will get a thump for the same reasons as I said before.

Yea I noticed these cars are noisy everywhere, but its normal. motor is noisy, the fans as well, the clunking sound... but I love it for some weird reason, it gives it that track feel. as long as you dont hear something out of the ordinary your good

I have a feeling:
I think the OP is talking about the noise after the gear is shifted into 1st gear and let the clutch go a little bit. And everyone else is talking about the noise at the moment when the gear is shifted into the 1st gear. |

Well, if you get a clunking after putting into gear & when you release the clutch a little, it could possibly be you are releasing the clutch too quickly & with not enough throttle; placing drive-train shock. Is this your first manual car OP?

I'm having a hard time trying to know when exactly it makes the noise. You said "after" letting go of the clutch on your first post, but now you're saying "before" releasing the clutch slightly.
