Well why don't you take the Formula Drift Scion as an example then?

600hp/500ftlb FR-S wearing Hankook RS-3 street tires in 245/40-17 front and 255/35-18 rear on 17x9 wheels Front and 18x9.5 wheels Rear (both +38mm offset.)

Wow some of you guys really have been suckered to think that 2700lbs is light and that 245s is a lot of tire... Neither is true.

I had a 2800lbs Cobalt SS turbo and 245s were nowhere near enough. One of my acquaintances has a 2500lbs S14 240 with 265s and 309whp and its not enough tire. I know another guy who is struggling for traction with a 2350lbs 240 with an LS1 and 350whp and he's on 295s. I think we can all agree that 245 is plenty for a stock FR-S but once it receives nearly 100whp or more, Its going to need much more. Not to mention I value looks 75% and performance 25% so it's OK to go over or under what I theoretically need.

I wasn't even referring to straight line performance. I'm talking strictly handling, but then again I'm talking about performance driving, not just driving to work where exploring limits in traffic is not the best idea anyway.

Wider tires don't give you more grip, they give you more heat capacity.

As far as fitting tires on wheels, it is better to have the wheel a little wider than the tire.... ...something like a 225-235 on an 8" rim vs a 245-255.

Same basic net grip level, with better handling due to lighter unsprung weight, especially if lighter than stock...

I approve of these messages. :happy0180:

It is a hot topic .. had to revive the thread..

I bought 255/35/19's on a 9.5" wheel for the rear. Should be very very pleased.

For the record SRT8 Chargers run 245/45R20 with over 400hp and well over 4000lbs. That 255/35R19 is over 5% different than stock diameter, 265/30 would have been my choice...

I'm not worried about diameter, the next time I see my car it'll have >250whp

265 would've been better than 255 obviously but I think 255 looks absolutely perfect on the 9.5.

It also plays into the quote "As far as fitting tires on wheels, it is better to have the wheel a little wider than the tire" by Jamal. Which the wheel is ever so slightly wider than the tire. The tires I got also have incredible sidewall strength. I had a friend run them and he said they were excellent for drifting.
