I am talking about actual review with actual tests and actual performance numbers comparing the two model years: lap times, 1/4 times, etc... not opinions versus opinions

the new one is better because 2017 is bigger than 2016..see 2017>2016

This. Because science. Another fact about 7: Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 8 9 2017 is better. In all seriousness, though, it's probably better, not that much better. They tweaked suspension, added some fancy brakes, some more creature comforts, and did some cosmetics. It's not a space-level jump from the previous models, so don't expect lap times to improve by 5 seconds or anything. |

I understand that completely, but I am interested to see what the sum of all the upgrades will amount to when actually measured with 'scientific' methods (for lack of a better word). |

Track times, driver opinion (even professionals) and any other 'data' gathered by driving the cars is probably the furthest thing from scientific as you can get. The changes are so minor that any real performance difference will be so small it will get lost in the noise of the variables.

And that is the exact reason why I said " 'scientific' methods (for lack of a better word) " But!! I feel that the additional horse power, plus the new final drive, plus the performance package, plus the increased chassis rigidity, etc... could likely result in consistently quicker lap times or even 1/4 mile times. And by consistently quicker times. I mean the same driver in the same cars (2016 vs 2017) on the same tracks, doing lap, after lap, after lap, or run, after run, after run. BUT! maybe it wouldn't. THAT IS WHY I WANT TO SEE SOME BACK TO BACK REVIEWS/TESTS OF THE TWO MODEL YEARS. Why is everyone giving me so much gruff on this??? I understand the differences are small. Any chimpanzee can see that by looking at the spec sheets. I don't intend to be rude. I am just ranting a bit. |

Heck, I want the same thing. I would love to see an official shootout between the FRS, 86, and BRZ PP. I'm sure it will get done, but I'm surprised it hasn't been done already. I would be very surprised if the revised 86 wasn't consistently faster than the original model, both on a track and the drag strip. |

... minus weight. If they invested also on weight reduction, then we could start talking. Mazda MX-5 outperforms our cars just because it is lighter. It doesn't have a stronger engine or a better final drive or anything else.

Yes, the 2017 is slightly heavier than the 2016. About 50 lbs I think.

There was once a test in tire rack. Bridgestone Potenza S001 didn't provide any great improvement in our cars. They got better results only after using a tire from the extreme performance category, but then I can argue that the BRZ has better tires.
