The BRZ / FRS is not the car for you.

Look at hot hatchbacks like the focus ST, fiesta ST, Jetta etc....

I would honestly consider utes an Australian thing, even though they've existed in many other countries at various times. I found this though, which I thought was funny.

OP, you need a fun car with room to spare? Go test drive the VW GTI. It's not as fun as the BRZ, but you can still have a lot of fun.

unfortunately i hate the look and feel of 4 doors........

its hard to explain.
ive driven coupes/ 2 doors my whole life and i love having plenty of visibility around me ( i ride motorbikes on a daily basis so i probably get this pet peeve from that). i cant stand it when i shoulder check and i see the B pillar. absolutely grinds my gears.

i would buy a feista ST 3door but sadly we dont get em in north America........ only 5 door.

same with the golf R 3 door...... but we dont get it here, only in Europe......
i have considered GTI but hard to find a good one around here that hasent been riced or driven hard. buying new is an option as im still shopping for cars at the moment.

Out of curiosity, why do you need a lift/hatch back for your work .. ??

Maybe pull a small trailer for work .. ??

As far as chopping up a BRZ to make a hatch back ...... I would suggest you rethink that. Yes, it could be done but ...... YIKES! the work!

On the other hand, folks have been doing stuff like that for years now.

folding down the seats in the BRZ gives u marginally more usable space. its more about the height, i need height to drop things in, instead of sliding them in if that makes sense.

for work i lift large/bulky , but not heavy electrical equipment, computers, and various other electronics. i also do alot of biking, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, etc etc. so a hatchback/liftback is a must.

As for modding the 86 chassis to make it a hatchback...I wouldn't do that, it will change how the chassis feels. The reason there is no hatchback version it because of the sportcar orientation of the 86 and it's immediate reflexes. Getting rid of the bracing across the back tying base of C-pillar/wheel well to base of C-pillar/wheel well would really noticably reduce the chassis rigidity and put more flex in the rear.
i test drive the nismo RS actully. i did like it, however i dont think the nismo RS come even close to the driving dynamics of the BRZ/FRS. the RS is front wheel biased and it really shows in the corners. plus the brz is way lower to the ground. probably the only thing that is comparable is the power.

yes thats what i figured. subaru and Toyota made the C pillar really thick and ridged, any modification of the back would compromise this. however thats why i said if i did a fast back conversion i would have to make a sort of reinforcement U bracket, and a large one at that, heavy too.

Get the current FRS/BRZ/86, but personally I would not convert it

Need a hatch? Get a Focus ST or Veloster. Not a fan of the veloster though.

If you're okay with pre-owned, get an RSX Type S.
ATM im leaning towards the veloster, it looks "ok", and its got the turbo for some good grunt, still an economy car tho...... but hatchback is a must!

i ahve looked into RSX and older celicas, its just really hard to find one that hasnt been riced or ridden hard. i live in calgary alberta canada, we got like nothing but trucks and SUV's out here haha.

Anything to big too fit there, I have to get it through the doors instead. As such.

I suspect the stuff you carry is too large or cumbersome to fit through the door.

Its probably a lot easier to go Veloster Turbo since I have yet to see anybody modify their twin to be a liftback. Not the worst downgrade and it drives pretty nicely, just note though its not really a proper sports car. Push it hard and you'll be reminded of its economy car roots(Accent). Its a car that's a bit more focused on style rather than sporty substance. Still, way better than your typical commuter car.
yes u nailed it! i agree with everything u said above.

and yes from what i could tell from the test drive the veloster turbo is a pretty good car. huyndai have come along way and their newest lineup of cars really do shine.

This hatchback body should be available for sale in North America by the end of 2016.
the new honda civic is too large, not many people know this but the new civic has become almost the same size as toyota camry, or the older gen Accords. for some reason honda keeps making their cars larger and larger.

i parked my civic next to a 2016 and i was so shocked, the new civic is about a foot longer, and almost a foot wider. no joke the size of a camry......

not to mention the new honda/ toyota vehicles look real bad. like so much fake areo, and fake scoopes, fake body cladding, fake , fake, fake. cant stand that. if honda and toyota just toned down their futuristic styling by about 2-3 points it would look great.
just looks like they are trying too hard to impress. or trying really hard to win the pissing contest for outlandish styling.

4 doors really grind my gears. however i did get a chance to test drive the 2009 subaru WRX wagon and i liked it. even tho it was a 5 door i found the seating position to be very forward and the b -pillar didnt really impair my vision.

With your requirements, the twins aren't for you. You aren't gonna have a great time packing things into the trunk of your precious BRZ/FRS.
i have more then enough cash for both, my current budget is 40G cash for a new car. its more of a storage issue, i just bought a new house and it has a 3 car garage, but my GF, me and both of our 4 motorbikes take up most of the space, and parking on my street is not allowed . ( long story short, the neighborhood we live in comes with some strange by-laws like snow removal bans and street cleaning bans, its a canadian thing haha..... so its next to impossible to park your car for more then a few days without getting it towed)

Utes are pretty cool looking, ive always liked the mentality of a ute.

never really under stood the point of a truck, the bed sits like 5 ft off the ground how are u suppose to place anything heavy in the bed if its that high off the ground???? a ute makes more sense since the bed is only 2ft off the ground.

just went down to the dealership and ordered a 2017 Hyundai veloster turbo, fully loaded, 32g cash. car will be ready for me in january-march they said.

the veloster just fits all my needs, while the BRZ didnt meet all my criteria, just most of it.

if toyota/ subaru do indeed come out with that hatchback gt86 i will be selling this veloster faster then you can say "sold" and buy a hatch gt86 :P

thankyou to everyone that responded.

cheers, from mike!
