Yesterday, I let my son drive my car. He just got his learners permit. He did ok, for the first time on public roads. However, I was in for sticker shock when I saw the quote for a new driver on my insurance once he gets his provisional license. Next year, I'll be out of luck if I want any new car parts.

Make him pay. Add an extra bit and buy more car parts!

My youngest took his driver's test in the 86. Should have seen the looks he got. Also parallel parked it like a boss because I made him learn how to parallel park in our Suburban first.

Depending on your insurance company if you assign him as primary driver of another car, the increase on yours should be minimal (based on my experience). if you are going to make him primary, then yea, all bets are off.

None of my kids could get cars until they had after school jobs that would support their car, including insurance. They were on my policy but had to cover their monthly rate. And they also had to keep their grades up in school. Both did just fine. PS Both started out with cheap used Honda Civics.

yep thats what I'm doing on my frs. I bought it when I was 17, I'm paying my dad for the insurance as I'm under his policy, its actually pretty good, I'm 18 now and paying 1200/year. I know some guys paying half of that a month!! it was a win-win for both of us, I'm surprised not a lot of people do that

Use the car as an incentive to work hard. I asked my parents 3 years ago that if I managed to get into the top their business school at TAMU I would get an frs... Once I got admitted I was like "hey mom you remember 3 years ago...". It didn't stop once I got it either, my dad said "if he doesn't get his fucking eagle I'll put the car on the fucking side of the road tomorrow"... I ended up getting my eagle. I also get the title once I get my masters in accounting, good parenting👍

I live in the lovely province of Ontario, notoriously known as the most expensive place in canada for insurance

Do you have comprehensive and collision coverage? If you meant 1200 CAD then that's under 900USD which is really good considering your age. Here in the US if you lived in one of our most expensive states to insure (Michigan or Florida) you'd be paying like 4,000 CAD a year easily.

If you have full coverage that's awesome, but check if you're not sure! You definitely want it on these cars.

yeah comp and collision because i was only able to put 10k down on the car I'm financing the remaining 6, the financing company needed it to be full coverage

Today I made my own chassis brace for inside the trunk. It's not a rear strut tower brace, it is connected to the frame near the strut tower. I had a piece of aluminum bar laying around so I figured I'd put it to use. I need to weld the 2 frame bolts in place, but even as it is now- held in place by spring torsion, it's working fine and secure. But I'll feel better with those frame bolts welded in place. 3 hours of trying to break it and hooning around some back roads and so far so good.

Yes it has made a difference in handling too. Maybe it's butt-dyno effect, but going by what I hear in the tires (as opposed to what I feel in my seat) when cornering, the rears break before the fronts do whereas yesterday they didn't. It'l be a fun project to make right either way.
